Mr WIU,
The court case was not settled The case never went to court, thus there was no guilt to be found.

Biagini's ethics violation heard by the Illinois Supreme Court as the result of a complaint by a former client. The Court ruled on the client's behalf and Biagini's license to practice law was suspended for 90 days.

In this case, Coach P has indicated that Western's Equal Opportunity Office investigated and found that he had been discriminated against. This in and of itself is a finding of guilt. However, by not being address before the courts, the university action taken against the perpetrators of the discrimination has not been shared as that would be confidential personnel matter.

However, if you see WG retiring soon or TVA taking a job elswhere you be at least fairly sure that the outcome of the discrimination investigation contributed to the cause of their rapid exit. However, if both hang around for more than another year, one could fairly well assume the only action WIU took was nothing more than a mere "hand slap."

Let's hope Coach P not only stays healthy, but is also able to rejoin the coaching ranks. He deserves nothing less.

Tbird,

The case was settled. A lawsuit was filed. Just because it didn't come to trial means nothing. Many cases are settled pre-trial. Most are, in fact.

Although I am a Coach P fan and would trust what he says, until there is a report produced which substantiates this (and if there is, I'm unaware of it), there is no cause.

My comments were mainly based towards the individuals who want Dr. Van Alstine and Dr. Johnson fired irregardless. For the last few years, they have gone on and on about this. My point was that for the standards for which an educational entity (Athletics IS a part of the university) should be measured - graduation rates and student-athlete performance in the classroom, WIU Athletics is very successful. Not as successful on the playing field, but considering the budget shortcomings of the program, they do about as well as could be expected.

But we have been successful competitors. For a while, we were at the tops of the league in football and in women's basketball. There are no less funds today than then. Why could be win then and not now.

And in this same "underfunded" current time, softball is winning and men's basketball is showing great improvement. And both golf and soccer programs have done quite well, too.

Perhaps with a new fundraiser on board we will be able to get more funds. It's unrealistic to keep asking the students to pay more and more, their contribution to athletics in terms of student fees has already doubled to help get athletics out of the hole it dug itself by overspending.

Without new funds, it's time to cut programs. And swimming at the end of the year when no one is watching isn't the answer. We need to cut where we would realize a financial difference.

And at the same time, we also have to realize that we are not meeting Title iX mandates by offering 10 men's and 10 women's sports. That clearly means far more, like double the number of men's opportunities when you consider how large football is. We need to be looking at what many other D1 schools have done. Virtually across the board, if they have football, they have fewer total men's sports than women's sports.

mr wiu,
I understand your position, but just because we all don't know what exactly happened behind closed doors doesn't mean that nothing happened. The university did find this to be an act of discrimination. That we all know to be true. If that's the case, the person who is responsible should pay dearly for this. Instead what we have is the only people losing something on this to our knowledge is Coach P who doe not have a coaching job and the university as a whole who is paying for the settlement. With all these budget cuts going on in the state, it is absolutely ridiculous someone has not been fired/let go for their discrimination as determined by the university. That person should be canned and replaced with someone who won't be costing the university as much money. I completely agree with the comment about Goldfarb showing some leadership. He seems like a nice person and I know he has had a rough year or so himself, but he has been one of the least charismatic presidents the university has ever had. He never displays leadership in hard times. It will be good to see him go soon.
