Could you share what the Director's Cup is measuring so I can understand what we are being compared on?

I'll try. It's the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics organization. You can just google to their site too, and learn more than I can fully explain.
Each school is awarded points for men's and women's success during the year- by divisions, D2,D1 etc.
A crystal Cup is awarded to the school with the most points. Points are earned by a formula they have established, which includes conference championship, post season appearance etc. The purpose is to recognize broad based success in athletic departments.

| It has some flaws in the formula, but, something that does give recognition to the schools with success across the board. Those who rank well, promote it. Those who don't rank so high tend to dismiss the rankings and say very little about the Cup.
