From the editiorial page of the Macomb newspaper:

What is happening to the Division I athletic programs at WIU?

A popular coach is disgracefully fired. No radio coverage other than the campus station, which can only be heard within 15 miles of Macomb.

Our family are all WIU graduates and have received five degrees from the University. I have been a season ticket holder for several years and support WIU athletics through the Western Athletic Club.

I will not be attending WIU events this year. This is not how a Division I athletic program, that used to be respected all over the country, should be run.

Looks the failure of Van Alstine's leadership has reached all the way to Burlington, Iowa.

How does he manage to hold on to his job with his pitiful performance record ???

Johnson coveted the opportunity to take over the administration of athletics when Mortier retired. Since then, we've been on a downhill slide. And just like with the rest of WIU administration, there's tons of excuses and they all seem to believe them.

We need a new President who will play hardball, not nerfball, and demand evidence of success, not just someone's "we're doing good" or even "we're working on it" assurance. We can hope, but with the Search Committee deciding on an job description that looks like same-o, same-o instead of a willingness to get a true CEO, I'm not optimistic.
