I was not able to listen to either game on Saturday. I live well outside the coverage area for WIUS-FM. And I was not near my computer either.

Does anyone know if WESTERN sent its Pep Band and Cheerleaders to the Tournament ????

They would always be at the games when the tournament was held in Moline, Fort Wayne, and Tulsa.

I hope that they were able to go to Sioux Falls to cheer on the teams.

Let's Go WESTERN !!

The radio guys said something about traveling with the cheerleaders so they may have been there, but I have a friend on the pep band and they didn't go.

Thanks, fan56!

It's good that the cheerleaders are there.

But the Pep Band should also be there.

I am betting that most of the other universities had their Pep Bands there. You would have thought that Tim Van Alstine would have made sure that our Pep Band was there. His leadership is lacking.

I can remember back when Chicago State was still in the conference. They did not send their Pep Band, but they did hire a local high school band to play their Fight Song, etc at the tournament games.

Certainly Van Alstine could have done something similar.

From what my band contact to me, it was a budget cutting decision not to send the Band.

712, I agree about the bands being present but also understand the budget problem. Mismanagement of the budget is one of those things that needs CHANGED. Mismanagement includes, heavily, the need for aggressive fund raising. Does anyone else notice that the women's radio games have no paid advertisements? Public service announcements and that is about it. Yesterday in the first half they didn't even have those, just dead air in the space a commercial should be. Something, anything would be better than nothing. Charge 25 dollars to read a commercial or 15! It would be better than dead air. OMG can you say poor leadership?

Back to the bands, it is common for schools from afar to hire or pay the other band to play the fight song at least and in the department's defense, I did hear the WIU fight song after the women won yesterday while the radio people were talking over the air. So somebody must have had the job of playing it. Just don't know who. Maybe the radio people can tell us about that on Monday the way they did about the post game news conference that Coach Crane was required to speak at

The absence of the Pep Band at the Conference Tournament is another example of the poor leadership coming out of Western Hall.

I watched the Missouri Valley Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference tournaments on TV over the weekend. The participating teams had their Pep Bands there.

WESTERN looks like a 2nd class outfit not to have a band at the games.

Heck, even Chicago State managed to hire a local band to play for them when they were in the Mid-Con.

When WESTERN played a football game at the University of Illinois a few years ago, the Marching Leathernecks were there.

At the very least perhaps A.D. Van Alstine, V.P. Gary Johnson, and Dr. Tom Cody could have donated some of their salary to send the Pep Band.

Every time WESTERN tries to show that it is "big league", it pulls a stunt like this.

Very disappointing.

Or maybe admins didn't need to attend. I'm sure there are required meetings for some, but likely not throughout the tourney. I wouldn't have cost that much more to send the PepBand than the separate rooms for WG, TVA, and Cody.

I definitely agree that not sending the Pep Band was a huge mistake, and realistically, wouldn't have cost all that much to accomplish it. Heck, maybe they could have had a community fundraiser to send the band.

I agree. The pep band needs to be there. Do some fundraisers, pass the hat, 50-50, whatever it takes to get them there. I just got back from the CAA tournament in Richmond,VA. The bands there played a crucial role in creating a great atmosphere for the fans. And if the fans are into the game, the players are the benefactors. The CAA has some really good pep bands. Virginia Commonwealth and George Mason go about it a very differently, but they are both top notch. These two pep band directors have such a passion for what they do and they do put on a show:

BTW, VCU beat George Mason this year in the quarters. I stayed around for the semifinals today. Old Dominion beat VCU in one of the best college games I have ever witnessed in person.

Next year, I am breaking from tradition and going to the Summit League tournament. Hope to see the band there and a few hundred WIU supporters as well.

Still fond of Purple and Gold. Go 'Necks!

Shame on Van Alstine for not sending the Pep Band to the conference basketball tournament!!

WESTERN is the oldest member in the Mid-Con/Summit. Yet it came across looking like a 2nd tier outfit at the Tournament.

Van Alstine gets paid a good salary to organize and run the Athletics Dept.

He now has one year to figure out a way to get the Pep Band to the 2011 conference tournament.
