With one second left a questionalbe foul call sends this game to overtime.

There were other questionable foul calls in the game. The refs had made up their mind ahead of time that NDSU was going to win this game.

If I am Molinari I am F**king pissed.

101, questionable foul call, maybe. But there were plenty of team mistakes on both sides of the ball in this one, at least from my Rocky Vision vantage point. Even maybe a coaching error by Mo or bad timing on Nurses part. WIU is up by three with 10 secs to go and choose to semi-intentionally foul to put NDSU to the line for two with 7 secs. They hit both free thows. Nurse was fouled immediately on inbounds pass and he nails both throws to put us back up by three with only 5 ticks left. So, after time out called, why not foul immediately before shot can be taken once again. This may or may not have been Mo's plan (he did not want to do much talking in the postgame interview). But the way it played out, we let their guy get off a 26 foot prayer with a second or two left. His attempt was not very close so I suspect their was some kind of contact. Instead of Nurse putting his hands straight up, he sort of twists into the shooter. Contact or no contact, he definitely put the referee on the spot. In the OT period during a timeout, I saw their coach motion with both arms straight up. He did not want a repeat of what happened earlier. That moment got away from us. I saw a similar thing happen to George Mason earlier in the day. This was one we can learn from for sure.

On the positive side, I do like our chances to do pull off some upsets in the tournament, but we will need a solid 40 minutes of our A-game to pull it off. Both ORU and IUPUI are quality teams, so I don't see a big disadvantage facing one over the other in the opening round. ORU knocked off IUPUI recently. IUPUI brings maybe a little more defensive intensity to the table and we will need to protect the ball against that pressure, something we did not do too well that last meeting.

Wish I could make the trip to Sioux Falls. Instead I will be cheering from afar. So Go Necks! Make some noise!! Have some fun!!! Also bring your dancin' shoes. You never know when you might need them.

Still fond of Purple and Gold. Go 'Necks!

I know that fouling instead of letting them hit a three is theoretically the thing todo, but, I would much rather pick them up full court and turn them a couple of times to take some time off the clock, and then foul them. That's probably what Mo had in mind, but you can't do it for the kids. I don't know if Nurse fouled or not, but I really don't think the 3 was going in! Who knows! Carol King said, "sometimes you win and sometimes you lose!"

A couple of more observations. The Necks have been starting a 4 guard, 1 center lineup, running the weave out top and looking for cutters. Last night you saw the emergence of Okifor as a force, and Gerbu got some valuable and effective minutes which included a dunk and a nice lefty layup. Both also boarded quite well. They will only get better. I also don't think Nurse has had the type of year that was expected. His shooting touch has been off in a lot of games. I am looking forward to Billy Mo taking the floor next year.

I think we will be really challenged by IUPUI. They have better talent at this point and it has showed in both games we played against them although the first time was better for the Necks than the second. (13 point loss vs. 28) These kids have hung together, gotten some wins, and created some excitement in Western Hall. You might say that waste management has truly arrived at "Waste Management Court!" But with our seed I am just not sure how far we can go. No matter, the foundation has been laid for a bright future.

ps. The love affair between the track teams and Mo is gonna continue which should gradually increase the size of the student fan base which should force people into the upper deck! Also, its really great to see these ball games on the net. Since graduation I have tried to follow the Nekcs as best as I could and the internet has made that a reality. I can still remember watching a football game in Target with the hope of seeing Western's score at the bottom. Or listening to Illinois games to get the WIU score at half, or WGN. I also called the pressbox once during a football game. Had the press guide and just called the number for the score. I think they thought I was nuts!!!!!

pss. I am ready to talk a little baseball! I like the disciplined approach Villano is taking. Stan did a great job recruiting these kids but at times I think he was a little loosy goosy. I also think the schedule is a little bit more realistic and will allow these kids to grow and get some success. Success breeds success. A loss is a loss and when you have a number in a row it can take you down very quickly during ball games.

There is at least one guy on bisonville.com that said WIU got "jobbed". He was not the only one, Another poster admited the Bison "may have gotten a gift".

Take that as you will, I generally think Mo is pretty composed, sure he looses it once in awhile. My understanding is he was absolutley livid! Sure WIU made mistakes, I just don't like when the stripes determine the outcome of a game.

I was hoping for a match-up with ORU in the Falls. Anyway, I know Mo, will have our guys as ready as they can be when we take on IUPUI, whatever happens happens, heck at least we aren't on the outside looking in

Congrats to Villano going to an established Southern D-1 program and comming back with a W.

Correction 101, there are a number of people on Bisonville that think WIU got robbed. They also said that Mo stared down the official who made the call at the buzzer during a full timeout in overtime. Some say he may have used some foul language and gone to the tunnel to chat with the refs after the game. He must have been PO'd big time!!!!!! One fan said the foul was a foul and wonder why Nurse tried to foul him! It did take alot of guts to hit three FT's in a row for the tie. No matter what, WIU basketball is now alive and well because we finally have a "heart!"

Time to move on! IUPUI should be very concerned!

Jump call late in the game with Okefor was bogus--foul all the way. Mo really went off on the block/charge call late in the game on our end. There were lots of questionable calls.

In Bisonville they think they are going dancing? What is that about?

ORU is a much better matchup for us than IUPU. In addition I could travel to Sioux Falls on Sunday and stay for a game on Monday. Going to Sioux Falls with a slim chance on Saturday makes the trip less likely.

Go Necks and go MO.

The WESTERN track team was in Fargo for a meet this weekend. While there, they showed up at the WESTERN vs North Dakota State game to cheer for the Leathernecks.

The track team has been very supportive of WESTERN basketball this season.

This photo shows the WESTERN track team at the game:
