Based on what I found on VA Tech's Website, it looks like his junior season is lost to the injury and he'll be a senior for 2010.
* The student-athlete may not have participated in more than two contests or dates of competition or 20 percent of the team's completed contests/dates of competition.
* The injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the season.
* The injury or illness does not have to occur during practice/competition, but it must be incapacitating.
* Appropriate medical documentation must exist and be provided.
While this is one a VA Tech site, I know that schools cannot set their own standards for medical redshirts so it must be in accordance with the NCAA Rules. Here is the link to their compliance manual...

Matt played the first 4 games of the season.
So based on the above info, it appears that he would not qualify for a "red shirt".
Let's Go WESTERN !!
