What on earth has gone on with the Purple Haze section this year ???

In its first year during the 2008-2009 season, the Purple Haze had a designated section at Western Hall that came with purple t-shirts that were on each seat in that section.

This year, the Purple Haze section started off behind the Western bench. But it has been moved again to behind the east basket. And there are no purple t-shirts this year.

Looks like Western Athletics is letting this group fade away.

So the Purple Haze will soon join the other groups that have come and gone: Rocky's Renegades and the Purple Posse.

Ugh. I find myself in agreement with 712. But facts are facts. They should have left the Haze behind the visiting teams bench. 712--I got it. We all know how the north side basically sit on their hands the whole game and can not be vocal. I bet this is what TVA is doing. Slowly moving the haze to the north side. Actually that would be very funny to see some of those people over there react to the haze

That would be a clever idea, 95Grad.

But I wonder why they are not promoting the group like they did last year ??????

I guess what promoting are you talking about? I dont remember seeing the shirts like you talked about last year, but I have seen ads in the Courier.

Last year, Western Athletics staff would place purple tie-dyed shirts on each of the seats in that section behind the visitor's bench. They would do that before every home game (men and women) during the school year.

So when the students sat there, they were all wearing those purple shirts. It really quite a visual effect.

But this year, there have no purple shirts placed in the seats.

I thought the shirts were a good idea.

i liked the haze better when they were behind the opposing teams bench. we need to make it hard for opposing teams to play here. instead of having students sit in any gen amisson area they need to all sit behind the opposing teams bench.

The Purple Haze was behind the opponents' bench last year, until some team (can't remember who) complained it was too loud. Um...isn't an opposing arena supposed to be intimidating? Does the Orange Crush at Illinois get moved because they are too loud and a distraction...NO!! It is expected at Assembly Hall. If WIU wants to move up to the big time, they need to create an intimidating atmosphere and pay less attention to the other team's whining about the loudness of the student body-it seems the band members are the loudest section at the games. I was at the Macomb game last Friday night and the Hanger is louder than Western Hall because of the energy of the Orange Crush and the other fans sitting in the stands. If WIU had 2-3x the energy of the Orange Crush at the Hall, I think Western could be pretty scary to play at home.

The demise of the Purple Haze is another example of the failed leadership by the Van Alstine administration.

Last year, this section was highly promoted. Purple tie-dyed shirts were available for people in this section to wear. It made quite a visible presence at the games.

This year, there is nothing other than the "Purple Haze" banner at the games.

So what started off with a bang last year is winding down to a whimer this year.

It all goes back to leadership - plain and simple.

Word I got on this after talking to a buddy I knew from my time at WIU that keeps in touch in the department was that apparently the coaches made a request for the student group to be near their benches instead of the opponents. Not sure what the coaches thinking would be behind this. I was at a game last year and remember the shirts just sitting out. The free shirts were a nice touch but I'm sure not something cost effective, but who knows on that one.

The Purple Haze program went from free last year to costing $5 this year. However, the shirts received were nicer (with printing) and I think there were some other benefits included. But as you might expect, Western students parting with $5 for anything other than beer...tough sell!

And 712, I think your record player might be broken - you may want to check that!!!
