Gonecks08 (11/1/2009) Do people not realize that while Coach Hendrickson was the "head coach" at the beginning of last season, Coach Patterson was still there. He was not making all of the calls from Day 1.
This year has been an embarrassment. We need a new Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, and Defensive Coordinator. But with the shady politics in WIU Athletics, I'm sure it won't happen. It's too bad they forced out somebody who knew how to run a football program. As a WIU student, I'm embarrassed to attend our home games.
Beg to differ. Coach P was not there the early part of the season, as he was undergoing treatment. He stepped down this year due to health concerns - and regardless of what the Courier, et al have said, I know people that know him, and he is suffering the aftereffects of his chemo and radiation. Look at the man - it's obvious! Also, we are playing with more injured players than most people are aware of. They're out there, but they're hurting. Granted, the O line needs MAJOR help, but it appears to me (and I could be completely off base) that they are young. For Pete's sake, give these kids a chance to develop. Yes, it's disappointing. Yes, our football team is sucking eggs right now. But stop and think of how many (and which ones) players we graduated. 2 went to the NFL. Others may not have gone on, but they played very well for the purple and gold.
I know it is just me, and probably only me, but I think this season was a losing prospect from the get-go. Switching coaches, starting QB knocked out for the season, a red-shirt freshman having to come in and being expected to be the second coming of Russ Michna.....get real. I still say if MH had been in charge from preseason on, we wouldn't be in quite the tailspin we're in. Granted, Barr going down would still have thrown a monkey wrench into the whole scenario; but I still feel like these kids (and coaches) deserve more than having the fans throw in the towel. JMHO.

I will say that I am no longer embarassed to attend the home games.
WIU football is no longer part of my life this year. My Dad (WIU alum) and I hung out today celebrating our B-Days. 67 for him 35 for me we talked about the Illini and watched the Bears and drank beer.
He and I will enjoy going to the Bradley game in Peoria on the 8th.

Sorry. You have been sadly misinformed. I know people that know Coach P too....ME! The only "suffering" has been caused by the poor decision making and deceit coming from the Athletic Dept. If you wish to believe otherwise that's fine, but I would think that kool-aid would be tasting a little bitter by now.

It's sad that people believe that he stepped down for "health concerns"...
Regardless, our team is 1-7 (0-5), and the owner of last place in the conference. We broke Indiana State's 33 game losing streak and put on shameful performances at home. Not only do fans have to put up with a bad team, but a horrid gameday atmosphere. Last week our field looked like crap, fans were bored to death with endless talking during halftime, and instead of involving fans and bringing an exciting college gameday atmosphere, we have a petting zoo.
Seriously? This is embarrassing...

Hanson Field was in terrible condition for Saturday's game.
Didn't we know that heavy rain was coming in ????? That is completely unacceptable for a "Division 1" program.
The University should consider moving the "Hall of Fame" ceremony back to the basketball season. The half-time show ran long. The kickers were not able to do their usual 5 minute practice before the 2nd half.
There was no pre-game excitement any where on Saturday.
Let's Go WESTERN!!

Q:how far can you really expect to go, either running the ball or passing with a pocket QB, when you don't have an 0-line?
A:not very far at all!
we need bigger and certainly better offensive lineman. give me a smaller recruit, but someone with passion for the game.
what i saw were ticket takers for offensive lineman. we lost against NDSU because of horrendous 0-line play PERIOD!
THE DEFENSE ACTUALLY PLAYED WITH SOME PASSION!
I say start fresh with a new oc and dc, and recruit some better offensive lineman.
I have seen more excitement at youth football games. Come on WIU get your shit together, we deserve a better speaker system, a better field[maintained by janitors] , and get the dog and pony show out of the football stadium! Act like a Division 1 school!!!!!!

I've been reading all the posts and I'd like to chime in. I spent time at every home game, watched the situation and here's my two cents. This team lacks leadership! From MH all the way down the coaching staff. There are so many talented players on this team that with a new coaching staff Western could win well over 70% of their games. Offense seams to be okay at least from a coaching perspective and they execute well til the red zone then fall short. With a just little bit of leadership they could be the best we've ever seen. Defense and special teams needs a complete overhaul of coaches. Any team coaching against us knows to get into the no huddle and watch our entire formation stand there waiting for the play from the sidelines while they're snapping the ball. These linebackers are really good, don't we have enough confidence in their abilities to let them do what they do best. Coaches should be teaching them what to look for and not blame them for their inability to react after ther play has already started.
The worst thing is that all these talented players suffer from bad coaching and leadership. This teams failures in 2009 can all be attributed to the off season. Building a team is more than just making them run 40's and lifting. Get them together in a social environment and let them build a team oriented bond. Don't allow anyone to think they are better than another player because as we can see it takes all 90 players working together to win.
I truly don't think this is the coaching staff that can make that happen, it's time for a change to bring WESTERN back to the strong history the school has always enjoyed.
That's just my opinion.

I think Coach Patterson is one of the most honest and kindest people I have ever met. I like him, I like his family, and I like the players he has recruited and who have been very successful for him. That said, it seems to me that for what ever reason, whether it be right or wrong, he is no longer head coach. Lets move on!
No face to end this because I am definitely sad for WIU and Coach P. He did a wonderful job as the boss of WIU football! We will miss you!
