Rocki, you obviously dont know or have had any experiences with actually getting to know Dr Goldfarb. He is a kind, caring, considerate man who has developed a love and passion for western il. The decision was not easy for him and he is making sure that the history of the westerwinds is not lost. He sees many sides of issues, maybe you should try that. Your slam was unnecessary and not appreciated...regardless of who you are (pro-westerwind or pro-leatherneck). I wonder how much longer we will have to deal with these kind of jabs.

Well, if you have to "deal with these kind of jabs", obviously there are more people than I who are upset with the decision.

You have your opinion. Mine is that IF this university cared so much about unifying teams, the passion for WIU, etc. there never would have been this mess to begin with. Women's sports didn't just start yesterday. But, they were NEVER referred to as "Leathernecks". They were "Western Women's team". So, there was a decision to have an "independent" name for women's teams (since they apparently didn't merit the use of "Leatherneck"). Fine. So Western's young women have been competing under the Westerwinds name for over 30 years. There was no need to have any history lost, as there was no need to strip this team of their name, period.

You don't have to like my opinion, but I am still entitled to have one, and it doesn't have to agree with yours. I stated my opinion. End of story.

While I understand the significance of losing the Westerwinds name and the fact that many are unhappy with it, life goes on. You cannot punish those who made the decisions today with the fact that in the 1970's women were not allowed to be called "Leathernecks". That would be akin to holding every person accountable for slavery in the United States who wasn't of African American descent.

These people in this administration were probably in college studying somewhere when that decision was made.

In Illinois many small communities have lost their high school mascots when they have consolidated with other schools. There is a lot of tradition and history lost. Carthage would be an excellent example. There are no more Blueboys or Bluegirls in Carthage - only Illini West Chargers.

Time marches on...things change...we don't always like it, but that is the way it goes.

I have to agree with SportsGal. We can all agree that the way women's athletics were treated in the past was wrong. But there's no one at Western now that was responsible for those decisions and in fact, I think they probably would all agree that it was an outrageous decision to separate men's and women's athletics in the first place. I know Dr. Goldfarb feels that way.

Basically, he was put in the position of "how do you right this wrong"? Do you continue segregating the teams based on names or do you join them in the way it should have been done originally.

He took his time, talked to all communities involved, and made a tough decision. Second guess all you like, but he MADE the decision, as was his responsibility.

mr. wiu-

How do you know Goldfarb felt that way? Did you interview him?

People who supported dropping 'Winds can spin it and sugar coat it all they want, but the truth is the way this was handled was shameful and discrimination against women athletes.

It's interesting we've never really read the opposite side of this story, only the one the univ. has wanted the public to know. We probably never will, if the univ. has its way.

As it's been proven before, history is written by the victors.

FYI! There are alot of great history books on the shelves about the civil war, slavery, anti trust suits and the like that are full of debated issues that have passed just like this subject.
The name Westerwinds is now part of the history of WIU! Let it go!

Windswim, good luck with this year's swim season. Do you have alot coming back?

President Goldfarb made the right decision.

Back in the 1970's, the women's teams were denied the right and privilege to use the name "Leathernecks". That injustice has finally been corrected.

And we have the example of our marching band which has always been called The Marching Leathernecks. The band has both men and women members.

Let's Go WESTERN !!

I couldn't agree more with WIU712. No longer divided.

What's the point of having a nickname, a mascot, if not all students participate in the name and identity??

I'm embarrassed that during my time at WIU I was deaf, dumb and blind to the whole thing.
