western-101 (6/8/2008) I have been trying to digest the MVFC football change and decide how I feel about i
The conclusion seems to be a hung jury inside my little pea brain.
I love MVC Basketball. I go to Most Bradley games and Some ISU games as Well as the MVC tournament in St. Louis. MVC is a basketball conference.
WIU sucks at Basketball.
The Gateway is (was) an awesome FCS conference and I liked the uniqueness that was the Gateway. IMO I don't see any gain to rebranding it MVFC. That being said the Missouri Valley name is well respected. Alot of people don't think that FCS football matters but for those that do follow FCS anybody and everybody knew of the "GATEWAY".
Is there going to be confusion now about the MVFC membership? How did Drake's football team finish this year in the Valley? Who is playing Wichita State in their non conference schedule for football? Is the Horizon League and the Summit league merging? Is the Horizon merging with the Valley? Who is in the Summit League?
What if the Five MVC members of the MVFC want to move to FBS (Hard to imagine InSU but bare w/ me) WSU reinstates football, Evansvillle is shown the door and Tulsa moves back to the MVC. Looks like a brand new all sports FBS conference.
I know the Gateway was run by the MVC but I liked the seperate name distinction of the Gateway. The way I look at it you have have five MVC schools to the four non MVC, of the five MVC schools three are perinial bottom dwellers MSU ISUred ISUblue. Compared to the football power schools of NDSU, SDSU, YSU, WIU. So since only two of the five MVC school have a leg to stand on with regards to football, I don't like terms being dictated to the four non MVC powers from the two MVC powers (UNI, SIU)
NDSU and SDSU are brand new so there is no Gateway history but comparing Gateway Campionships between YSU, WIU and MVC teams not named UNI shows a large disparity WIU and YSU have 7 championships between them. SIU, MSU, ISU, ISU have 6 between them.
Maybe YSU, WIU, NDSU, SDSU should have banded together to insit the name change should be Summit-Horizon League.
Back to Basketball who knows what will happen with J-MO at the helm if we become good at Basketball and continue to be good at football the door to full MVC membership may swing open.
MVC needs to carefull about how they treat the non MVC members if Youngstown state left to rejoin the OVC or move up to the MAC and NDSU, SDSU, and WIU picked up our marbles and started sponsoring football in the Summit the new MVFC would be left with two good teams SIU and UNI. That could set the stage for the Summit League football being more dominant than MVFC football.
Those words will never be together unless something major happens (not that it would be bad) but I'm just stating this out of Opinion only. I feel the powers to be at NDSU have aspirations for FBS football, and being in a conference like the MVFC there are other teams that also have those aspirations, with the payraise to coach Bohl up to 300K (total with bonuses), and the season ticket sales approaching 10,000, 4 of the 5 home games sellouts last year, I'm nearly positive our AD is thinking about it, I may be way wrong but everything is just falling in place and pointing to a FBS move in the next 10-15 years, also could be sooner if the BCS system were to ever go away. I for one am hoping they move to FBS, but its done in a timely manner with most of the "loose ends" tied up and not to just jump into it, but extremely happy to be in the MVFC with great teams like you guys, and also in the Summit!
PS - Most Bison fans understand that an all MVC invite could never happen and some talk out their a##, but with the upgrades to our BB facilities (hopefully know by the end of the August if the new Arena is going to be built) it's always fun to think to the future, and MOST fans also appreciate and enjoy the play in the Summit afterall its gauranteed home games every year, and beats the hell out of being Independent! just my 2 cents on the subject.

Yes, expansion of the MVC seems unlikely current membership likes the double round robin in league scheduling.
I could see the MVC without Evansville. But in line first to fill that spot would be St. Louis, then Butler.
If the MVC decides to do the unpresidented and do a major expansion, where by there would be a North and a South division then there could be room for more schools at the table.
MVC is a basketball school NDSU in its current level of basketball would fair poorly in the MVC. YSU worse and WIU and SDSU worse yet.
The Summit is a good home for WIU SDSU and NDSU currently. Hey TJ if it makes you feel more prideful remember that the Gateway (now MVFC) was founded by four Summit League/MidCon Teams to the Valley's lowly two teams, yes the Summit/MidCon out numbered the Valley 2 to 1.
Another thought for those NDSU fans that can't wait for FBS football one may want to consider the WAC (although I would never want to loose NDSU as a member).
