We are in name only the Valley. I would view it as them letting the "gateway" license the name. The structure is still the same but we are not officially considered members of any kind of the MVC, only members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Kind of strange. There are NCAA and MVC bylaws that are in issue if football ever became officially absorbed into the Valley.

Okay! I agree with you! But who cares!!!!! I would imagine that selling a Valley football package will be easier than selling a Gateway package.

I agree- GONECKS. I hope fans of WESTERN- or any of the other schools- don't believe this is a first step in MVC membership, because it's not. I also hope fans don't go around telling others that they are now MVC members- this isn't the case. If you have really thick skin, go on the Valley board and say this, and see what happens.

Personally, I think it gives added recognition to the "Gateway" football conference. Lets face it, the Missouri Valley name is well known nationally. I still feel it's necessary for the WESTERN administration to keep their eyes open in this new *allignment*. Wichita State is rumored to renew their football program. WIU712 hit on this in an earlier post about the newly named conference.

I'm certainly not against the name recognition the Valley brings. I see it as a positive. Administrators at WESTERN, keep your eyes and ears open!

I agree with Neckfansince 71. I believe the Summit is a good fit for WESTERN.

All this is my two cents worth.

Go WESTERN- WIN THE MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!

Gateway Football Conference Changes Its Name!!

Release: 06/06/2008

ST. LOUIS – Presidents of the nine-member Gateway Football Conference and the 10-member Missouri Valley Conference have approved a rebranding initiative that changes the football conference name from the Gateway Football Conference to the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The change is effective immediately.

It represents the second name change for the football league, which begins its 24th season this fall. Initially, the conference competed under the Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference (1985-91) and the Gateway Football Conference (1992-2007).

“This is going to allow the Missouri Valley Football Conference members to take advantage of year-long positive exposure received by the Missouri Valley Conference,” said Missouri Valley Football Conference commissioner Patty Viverito. “Both leagues have developed a tremendous brand name, but the timing for the name change is right. The league expands July 1 with two new members, and with this new, stronger lineup, rebranding now makes sense.”

Although the league will share the Missouri Valley name, the football-playing members will compete under a separate administrative umbrella, as the Missouri Valley Conference and the Missouri Valley Football Conference will remain separate entities.

Members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (and initial year of membership) include Illinois State University (1985), Indiana State University (1986), Missouri State University (1985), North Dakota State University (2008), the University of Northern Iowa (1985), South Dakota State University (2008), Southern Illinois University (1985), Western Illinois University (1985), and Youngstown State University (1997).

Five Missouri Valley Football Conference members also compete in the Missouri Valley Conference (Illinois State, Indiana State, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, and Southern Illinois). Three league schools compete in the Summit League (North Dakota State, South Dakota State, and Western Illinois), while Youngstown State competes in the Horizon League for its other sports.

One WESTERN. All Leathernecks !!

Go Leathernecks !!

Kind of funny. Looking at the SDSU and NDSU boards, you can see several posters talking about future MVC membership. Seems like several see the Summit as a stepping stone to what they really want- MVC membership.

They better get more media market, more money, more national exposure, more population and more championships!

The MVC is all about media markets, men's basketball, national recognition, and, money.

And then if you scroll down on the Bradley board they are talking about the demise of the Atlantic 10. Temple's move to the MAC and the implications that will bring. WKU is mentioned constantly as interested in the MAC!!! They have Butler moving to the A10, and a whole host of things going on. They appear to be down on Evansville as a member of the MVC. Not sure why. Fun to read the open and wild lines of conjecture. Remember last year when the Dakota's were just trying to gain interest and membership in the Summit?
