This is probably the most important hire of A.D. Tim Van Alstine's watch while at WIU. Tim has been able to secure outstanding coaches at all the rest of the programs except for Men's B-Ball. Can he get his second try right at making WIU Men's B-ball a relevant sport again instead of a revenue sucking sport that it has become over past 10 years of "VERY BAD BASKETBALL @ WIU." I certainly hope so, because for me....Men's B-Ball is my favorite sport at WIU. Let's go Necks !!!!

The Western Courier reported today that Athletic Director Tim Van Alstine has already received 39 applications for the men's basketball coaching job. He plans to have a decision made by early April.
Let's hope that he can find that right "someone" who can re-ignite the excitement at Western Hall.

The new men's basketball coach will have to be highly skilled in Public Relations if WESTERN is to bring back the excitement of the Jack Margenthaler days to Western Hall.
The new coach will have to have a public presence. He will need to meet and address every campus association (dorms, frats, etc) and community groups (Rotary, Kiwanis) as is possible. He will have to be very good in marketing the men's basketball program.

Sounds like TVA doesn't want to do same type interview process at Final 4 like he did last time with the Thomas hire. He said this morning on radio he felt like it was like "speed dating" interviewing candidates at the Final 4 the last time. Also definitely sounds like he wants some one who has had D-1 Head Coaching experience already so that seems to eliminate 3 highly regarded D-1 Assistants for now that were on the initial list of prospects on some forums.

I agree, I think Western needs someone with prior head coaching experience not necessarily D-1, but just been a head coach before, i.e. Kevin Gamble at Ill-Springfield. I think the experiment of getting a top assistant with no experience was tried and didn't work. I am positive that DT will end up being a good coach somewhere down the line and he and that school will have WIU to thank for letting him get his feet wet here.
My top 2 choices right now are probably Hinson and Gamble.

Kevin Gamble has taken UIS to the NAIA National Tourney several times. UIS will be entering the conversion process to move to NCAA Division 2.
Kevin is a Springfield guy and has economic ties to it. A good offer would have to be made to get him to consider WESTERN.

Hinson interviewed for the open job at Mercer University Monday. Mercer is prepared to pay 5 times what WIU would offer. gamble is an interesting suggestion. He has had success at Springfield, but at a much lower division with less expectations. I still hold out hope for Brad Soderburg and his D-1 talented son in a package deal if he would be interested at all in WIU. Not sure WIU would be able to pay enough to entice him either.

| What would Western offer? 5X sounds a bit high for Mercer.

I too was surprised to read that Mercer may offer up to $500,000 with total package according to article posted on PJStar Forum. Maybe higher than what actually would be, but still way higher than what Thomas was making. I would think WIU would have to offer more than he was making though.
