For me, this is not a surprise. I said last year that Tim would honor Derek's contract. 5 years is 5 years and I am going to go out on a limb and say that it was DT's job to win or lose. I have no idea what the agreement was, but I would have been happy with 18-10 and a trip to the semi's of the Summit. Still, it is again time for a change. Change is good sometimes. It will be good for DT and it will be good for WIU. And, we are definitely in a better position this year than last. DT brought in some good talent, they matured and played well at times, 12-18 is a good start with a young group of kids. So thanks DT. You left your mark. The program is better off than Kerwin left it. But it is time to move on!!
But who?? I know there have been 5 names mentioned!!! But I have a hunch that the next head coach is gonna be a big surprise!!!! We need some excitement, somebody who can inject some life into the program and Western Hall!!!!! But who???????????

| I wonder if Western would have won there first round game if that would have been enough to save DT's job or if it was pretty much a done deal.

Yeah, it wasn't much a surprise to me either. Sad to see it in that Coach Thomas is a nice guy and did his best to get Western back on track. And I also think the program is better off than it was the last couple of years or so with Kerwin.
But I think a change had to be made. The last 4 games (including the one tourney game) saw Western lose all of them and 3 of them they lost pretty ugly-like. If they would've finished stronger and won a game or two in the tourney, I think he might've stayed. At least I would have halfway campaigned for him to stay.
He will be fine though. I bet he latches on with a good D-1 program as an assistant -- maybe even make more $$ at another school in that position. Good luck, Coach Thomas. I hope you land on your feet and wish you and your family nothing but the best.
As for the next coach -- that Hinson guy is someone I'd put at the top of my list. I know the folks squawked there that he didn't get win enough "close games". But he sure did win quite a few there -- I'd take his accomplisments here in at second.
Another one to consider is Matt Margenthaler. I could see him generating some interest.
Regardless -- I am glad they are getting started on this right away. The sooner they get a new coach in there, the faster he can start getting up to speed and start recruiting.

Margenthaler would be a great get for you guys. He is a great recruiter, was the reason behind our success in the last 8 or so years we were D-2. He is a great coach. I remember a story of when we played USD one year and their assistant's was bitching the whole game. He got up off the bench and yelled at the guy to Sit Down and Shut the F up! needless to say the guy sank into his seat. It would be great to see a Nagy-Margenthaler battle.

| I don't have enough knowledge regarding any of the potential candidates. I just hope they recruit good character, get student athletes willing to represent the university well, AND, the coach doesn't embarrass the school in any way. Oh, and win enough games- throw in a conference title in a couple of years- to keep WESTERN competitive in the conference and around the Midwest. This isn't asking too much of a coach-is it?

I couldn't tell you a thing about him. I haven't payed much attention to UND since 2002. This might be the place to get the best info http://forum.siouxsports.com/index.php?s=685577b46d7ea8219697f974d4e83969&showforum=16

Heard Soderburg has a pretty good son who is a Senior that could follow his Dad to where he goes. Another plus for Soderburg.
