Dismissal from the women's basketball program puts junior transfer ChrisDell Harris' focus to track and field.

ChrisDell Harris enjoyed plenty of success at Barton County Community College in Kansas - both on the basketball court and through track and field - but her choice to continue her basketball career landed her at Western Illinois.

On Dec. 16, her plans changed.

According to a release from Athletics Media Services, Harris was "dismissed from the Western Illinois University women's basketball team in response to conduct detrimental to the program," after playing in six games.

"(Women's basketball coach Leslie Crane and I) didn't get along," Harris said. "That's all it was. It wasn't working out, and I didn't think it was going to work out. And, I just think she thought the same thing.

"I just felt like it was time for me to move on," she added.

While she had originally planned to compete in both basketball and track and field at Western, her path changed slightly with that announcement.

Harris contacted track and field coach Mike Stevenson after her departure from the Westerwinds' program to express her wish to compete with the team this season rather than redshirting like the original plan entailed.

"She was just really eager to be involved in the program right away," Stevenson said. "And, the way things had ended with her and basketball, she was pretty fired up."

"I'm hungry," Harris said. "I didn't feel like I was used in basketball. I want to be somewhere where I can contribute to WIU as a whole. I feel like now my talent, my athleticism is getting used. I'm happy."

Chris Dell is going to once again put WIU on the national track map like Aubrey did a couple of years ago. We also have one heck of a pole vault core in place on both the men's a women's side. Stevenson does an outstanding job! He has definitely become more aggressive on the recruiting scene.
