A Day in I-AA, 2002
"In my mind, at least 15 of the 16 teams in the field are clear, though there are plenty of other questions, like who will be the top four seeds. McNeese State, Georgia Southern and Western Illinois are obvious, but a number of other schools will be considered for that fourth spot."

I remember sitting at Hanson Field on the cold day when the "Sledge Hammer" incident occurred with Western Kentucky.
Western almost tied the game up at the end with a very long field goal attempt by Mike Scifres.
Let's Go WESTERN!!

I am a WKU Hilltopper fan who lives in Bowling Green, KY and I periodically read your message board. This thread was of particular interest to me since it involved WKU. But first let me tell you that one reason I read this board is that I was born in Monmouth and went to elementary school in Roseville. My mother was from Macomb and i still have relatives there. I was last in Macomb in May and return every year or two. My family moved to KY and I graduated from WKU and am a season ticket holder for WKU football.
With that said. I remember well the 2002 season especially both games with WIU. We were lucky to win the playoff game in Macomb. The win was marred by the idiot from WKU who had the sledge hammer and was glad he was kicked off the team. I ended up attending the championship game in Chattanooga and had a ball.
By the way I met the WIU football coach last spring when Illinois played WKU in baseball. He was at the game to watch his son.
WIU will be playing baseball against WKU in March here in Bowling Green and plan on attending. Our athletic director, Ross Bjork, came to us from UCLA but received is Masters degree from WIU.
Good luck next football season!

I went to WKU for the first time this year to see a game and I came away really impressed. I really liked the city, campus, and especially the stadium. Even though it was small for an FBS school, I like it better than others that are twice the size (I'm looking at you, Northwestern!). I was happy to see them bowl eligible this year and having success. I think it'd be really cool (or sad) to schedule a game in the future to see how the two programs have evolved. While WKU is growing, we're toiling in the depths of last-ranked defenses and Josh Hudson at QB.
Oh, well. We'll be back sooner or later!
