It has just been announced today that ISU will receive a new East side Hancock Stadium. The new East side will accommodate 7,500 spectators and is scheduled for completion prior to the 2013 season.

I guess once this happens Hanson field will officially be the crappiest stadium in the MVFC. Sure the turf is nice and the East side is nice, but my God, the West Side was embarrassing 20 years ago.
Although, the West Side does elicit a lot of emotions from folks, Generally one of two things happen WIU fans look at it and weep, fans from other schools (and recruits) look at it and laugh.

I also noticed that FBS Ball State is planning on playing AT ISU in 2013. Looks like ISU is really making some upgrades to the football program and its direction.

The 1950 west grandstand has gone from just being an eyesore to now being a safety hazzard.
The stairs are start to crumble away in many places.
And at the first home game this season, I noticed that the wooden bleachers (Sections A, B, F, and G) are splintered in many places. You definitely don't want to be wearing shorts or thin pants if you are sitting in those sections.

When I first saw the pictures of their new east side, it reminded me alot of the proposed design for WIU's west side. The only difference of course is the colors and the fact that they have the money to do it and the Neck faithful continues to wait. If you look at the ISU coach's statement in John B's blog in the Burlington Hawkeye, it seems it will expand the seating from 9500 to 14,000 and add boxes etc. I would call it a step up but not a step towards the FBS. You can say what you want, but Hanson is the most picturesque stadium in the MVC. Anyone got 10 million to get it at least started?

The westside of Hanson Field is in sad, sad, shape.
There are crumbling stairs making them into a safety hazard.
But now the wooden bleachers in Sections A, B, F, and G are splintering away. This makes for another safety hazard.
Fans/Alumni attending Homecoming will be shocked at the apperance and condition of the west grandstand.

I sat on that side a couple of weeks ago and will be sitting over there also for Homecoming game. I am not sure they will be "shocked" by the state of the westside, but it is obvious that it needs to be repaired. I just don't really see them throwing alot of "stop gap" money in that direction in the very near future. One of the main differences between the ISU plan and the WIU plan is the desire to make the weststands not only useful for athletic events, but also as a classroom building, football offices, and a hall of fame. ISU already has a building at Hancock for football offices.

I have to admit that I was shocked at the condition of the wooden bleacher seats on the west side. They have really deteriorated over the last 12 months.

So back in 1989 win Redbird Arena was completed there was a 20 year bond and it was to be paid for by student fees.
Now that that has expired. ISU plans to fund the East side Stadium on Student fees.
Hmmmmm, I know WESTERN had student fees for the Student Rec Center project. Any student fee money being applied to Intercollegiate athletic facilities?
Some of us on this board may become inactive when the stadium finally arives due to the inconvenience of becoming deceased.
Hey college is outrageousluy expensive, but, if all the other schools are gonna load the kids up with student fees......well.... heck at least they could get a nice football venue to be proud to watch games in.
I wonder if it is going to take somebody tripping and breaking their neck for something to be done about the West Side.
No hand Rails, crumbling concrete, uneven bleacher boards that are warped and splintered. Jesus Christ, If nothing else, just close of the West side for this year so no one gets seriously hurt. I am not attempting to be overly dramatic or a smart alec, I just wonder if it feels like it is worth it for someone to get seriously hurt or worse.

The west side has now become a safety hazard.
If we are not close to get it replaced, we best be doing our best to keep it going by making some necessary repairs.
Certainly we can access some Life Safety Code money to do that.
