Hey 712, how did the soccer team look? Did he use the game to play everybody? Score was a bit lopsided in the negative.

This was an exhibition game for both teams.

This was the "Soccer Reunion" game, and I did see a good number of former players in attendance. The former players were honoring former coach John MacKenzie's 75 birthday. Coach MacKenzie was Western's soccer coach for 29 years. Today's field is named after him.

Graceland won the game 4-0. It was scoreless at the half. Graceland scored the first goal on a penalty kick. They then added 3 more goals in the last 20 minutes of the game.

Both goalkeepers played for Western. Each gave up 2 goals.

Western's rooster lists 29 players. But we only had about 4-5 players on the bench.

I did not have a program. I don't know if we played with 15 players in the first half and a different with 15 in the second half OR if only 15 players dressed for this game.

We played Graceland at home last year for the 1st exhibition game. That game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Graceland is located in Lamoni, Iowa. They play in the NAIA "Heart of America" conference. Culver-Stockton College also plays in that conference.

We play another exhibition game at home on Monday vs Quincy University.

First "regular" game will be August 27th at Wisconsin.

First home game will be August 29th vs Drake. Drake beat us last year 3-2 in a game played at Des Moines.

The little concession shed was not open for Saturday's game with Graceland.

Heard anything about the parameters for "tailgating?" Like where???

Updated Info:

Athletics posted a message on August 18th stating that 2011 Tailgating policies are still under discussion. Once all of the details have been worked out, they will update the "Tailgating" section of the Athletics website.

"Is anyone else worried that the new turf won't be finished in time for the Sept 10th home opener ????

I had thought that work would start shortly after the annual April big track meet. But nothing has started yet.

Our friends at Appalachian State are replacing their turf. They started work in April, and it is still far from finished.

I see an upcoming nightmare where the field is not ready, and we end up playing our home opener at Macomb High School.

Let's Go WESTERN!!" (712)

Okay, I am not going to gloat about this but I just want to go on record that I thought they would be done with the field by September 10th and it looks like I was close but wrong! I think its done, finished, and ready for practice as was planned! I saw them putting down the rubber pellets to complete the football field project. Now they still might be working on the track and the different runways that were erased with the turf, but still, I really think that very soon we will see the "Fighting Leatherneck Football Team" practicing for the first time on the turf! Guess you could say that "miracles never cease!"

Well, I have to admit that I am surprised that things went as well as they did in getting the field completed.

The very dry weather helped.

I stopped by the field today. It looks essentially done. My only complaint is that the two "Missouri Valley" logos are just way too big.

The new field turf does not extend far behind the north endzone. But it goes all the way to the track on the south side. So maybe that is why there will only be bleacher seating behind the north endzone. Perhaps they don't want to put those old bleachers on top of the field turf on the south end. The bleachers behind the north endzone will not be sitting on the field turf.

No new flagpole up yet. I hope they just don't re-install the old one as that one was bent at the top.

At the Leatherneck summer social in late June at the Macomb Country Club, there was a lot of concern about the field turf being completed in the planned 64 days. I did hear while there that the University did have a "contingency plan" with Monmouth College to play our September 10th game there if Hanson Field was not completed by that time. Looks like we won't have to worry about that now.

Also, they'll be putting together an official policy and "procedures" for the official Policy Manual and the Administrative Procedures Handbook. Since I'm the one who posts those to the website, I'll be sure to post links to them the second that I get them online. I've got plans for possible Alumni Band in the tailgate area for a game, so I'm eager to find out what they're doing this year as well.

I was surprised to read that the first game on the new turf at Hanson Field will not be our September 10th game vs Jacksonville University.

Instead it will be a JFL game on September 4th.
