Is anyone else worried that the new turf won't be finished in time for the Sept 10th home opener ????
I had thought that work would start shortly after the annual April big track meet. But nothing has started yet.
Our friends at Appalachian State are replacing their turf. They started work in April, and it is still far from finished.
I see an upcoming nightmare where the field is not ready, and we end up playing our home opener at Macomb High School.

Bids for the work were suppose to be opened Thursday and Friday, but the opening date was changed to tomorrow and Tuesday. There is plenty of time although the work will have to be done at a good pace. There is a clause in the contract about September 10th!

I get where you are coming from 712 that we are already well into June with nothing started yet make me feel a little bit uneasy.
I am trying to convince myself that those "in charge" know what they are doing

I remember back in 2007 when the work was being done on the east side. It was a race to the wire to get the seating completed in time for that first game.
And one of the two new concession/bathroom buildings was not finished when the season started.
I am seeing how long it is taking at Appalachian State with their turf replacement. They are already two months into their work, and they still have a long ways to go.
It's making me nervous. Only 3 months until that first home game.

With the bid process complete, it appears that some dust and debris will be coming from Hanson Stadium in the very near future. Rumor has it that a camera is in the works which will enable all of us to keep track of the progress on the internet. I think the goal is to have the work done by the end of August. Whoever does it will have to be very aggressive and organized! The first part of this of course is going to be dusty and dirty. I am sure I will probably make a swing through Macomb at some point in time this summer to see the process with my own eyes!
Let the fun begin!

I was on campus today (June 10, 2011). No work has started on the new field. The first home game will be 90 days from now on September 10.
Appalachian State is putting in a new turf. They have said that it is a 3-month project. They started their work in early April.

WIU712,
I thinnk the timeline is tight, but I am not surprised that you did not see any work being done! The bids were opened on Tuesday July 7th! If you come back in a week or two and nothing is going on, there might be cause to worry! They are not asleep at the switch!

Think you meant June 7th, not July 7th.
Hopefully that extra month will give us time, but I too am worried. It seems like we should have had a bid open more like May 7th so we could begin work right after the May 15th graduation.

Yes, I did mean June 7th! I think the biggest problem and reason for the delay was the engineering that had to take place prior to the bid release which occurred on May 16th! Things turned out to be just a little more complicated than was first thought. There are some track facilities and drainage that will be directly affected by the new turf! I think things will be well underway by the 7th of July!

I hope there is a provision in the contact that states something along the lines of "If the target date of Sept 10th is not met we will only pay 80% of agreed upon bid...not done by 2nd home game we pay only 50% of agreed upon bid" ...."gentlemen do you agree to these terms?...OK well start working you've got 88 days to get it done" (or basically you do it for free)
Also, I would allow them the use of Hanson Field's Lights, if come to crunch time, an extra shift of work is needed.... Of course we would bill the contractor for the "juice" to make the lights shine...but we could be decent about it and just charge them what it costs us. We just want the damn thing done.
