They did pretty good this year. Two divers making it to the NCAA national Championships meet. One winning Diver of the Year award in the Conference. As for the Conference record in swimming. The women finished Second and the Men finished third. Under a fairly new staff at Western they are doing well. Last year the coach was named Coach of the year. I swam for Western from 1995-1999. We won 5 Conference Champs. Two my senior year. It does seem that the program had dropped a little but is picking up some good recruits now. I agree the school has to have something that makes people want to go to Western. What is it that they are missing. When Western was a Football power we were also a Swimming Power. Maybe we just need a few other programs to win and maybe the rest will follow.

That's my two cents worth.

RE: Year in review (03/26/08)

meganeck (3/31/2008)
I don't know much about baseball recruiting, but hasn't the baseball team snagged some better recruits. I guess we can all agree that the train went off the tracks starting in 2004. Why was that exactly? Since we were a football power, should we not have had an advantage in recruiting?

My guess is that unless you are a real national football Power like UNI, most programs are going to have up and down cycles with regards to success on the field. The only problem for Western is that Identiy-wise if we don't have football what do we have?

Back in the late '90s and early '00s if it came up somehow that I was a Western alum more often than not people would coment "Oh you guys are real good in football" or "How are you guys in football this year" or anything along that vein. Silly as it may seem, I actually derived some sort of pride and identity living vicariously through our football success.

If for whatever reason my association with Western comes up now the most I can hope for is a blank stare or an "Oh that's nice" or more likely some less than favorable comment about Macomb or trying to get there from anywere.

Leatherneck nailed it on the head, I think if you are associated with Western you want to have a feeling of recognition that preceeds the insitution. The best thing we had going for us in the mid to late '90s and early '00s was Football. I sure hope we can return to our past glory this year. My self esteem is depending on it
RE: Year in review (03/26/08)

I agree,DOG. Gimme a break, playing teams like UI-Springfield, and Truman St. or whoever it was that was named as a dropdown...flat out embarrassing. That's not the answer. It's ridiculous watching garbage teams finish sub .500 year after year. We have a a shining moment here and there. Someone mentioned bowling...we also had a very good men's golf team the last two-three years. Almost all of those guys graduated. As I've stated before, we are a football school first, and we better see something in '08 that makes us proud of our program.

RE: Year in review (03/26/08)

I believe that is correct,Pit.

RE: Year in review (03/26/08)

Wasn't WIU national champs in bowling a few years ago.

RE: Year in review (03/26/08)

So is the answer dropping down to Division 2 ????

We would have natural rivalries with Truman State in Kirksville and UIS in Springfield (who is trasitioning from NAIA to Division 2).

RE: Year in review (03/26/08)

Leatherneck Baseball is an embarassment period.
