Perhaps he is waiting for the spring sports to finish up before announcing it.

I really have not heard many people supporting this idea to go with the one team name. Seems like it is an idea that originated with Vice President Johnson and Athletic Director Van Alstine.

Perhaps it does make sense from a marketing standpoint. We will have to wait and see what President Goldfarb decides to do.

Zane Teilane to play in Olympics

Zane will be playing for Latvia in the Olympics after her team won play in Tournament to participate. NDSU - Leadership + Lopez's = Success
2. Oral Roberts - Foreign Recruiting Success Continues
3. Western Illinois - McKay's young team could push them towards the top
4. IPFW - The thought of the end of 2007 haunts them
5. SDSU - Anger and Rooney lead the Jacks, but who will be the supporting cast
6. Oakland - Success appears to be in the near future
7. IUPUI - Medicore seems to be the path of the Jags
8. UMKC - Like their unathletic mascot, the Roos appear to be lacking in the talent
9. Centenary - The struggle continues

Obviously, I think ORU and NDSU should be at the top of the class this year, with Western close behind. IPFW has to find a good way to close out their seasons or they will be stuck on the outside looking in. The Jacks have the big unknown, as most of their roster and schedule has yet to be completed. Goodnight returns to help lead the Jags this year. Oakland's depth could be quite scary for fom opponents this year. UMKC just can't impress me no matter how ugly their uniforms are. The Catahoulas of Centenary might have depth and many freshmen, but not much else.
We'll see what happens between now and December.

New Winds Asst BB Coach

Cowgill joins Westerwinds coaching staff!!

Courtesy: Western Illinois Athletics
Release: 06/03/2008

K.C. Cowgill joins the Westerwinds after spending the previous two seasons at Centenary College.

Western Illinois University women’s basketball head coach Leslie Crane announced the hiring of Centenary College assistant coach K.C. Cowgill as an assistant coach for the Westerwinds.

“K.C. will be a great asset to our program because of her playing experience both at Nebraska and Missouri State where she led the nation in three-point shooting percentage her senior campaign,” Crane said. “Her experience in the conference is an important piece of the puzzle for us to win another conference championship. Because of these two components she will be a great teacher with our players.

Before assuming her duties at Western June 2, Cowgill served as an assistant coach at The Summit League foe Centenary for two years.

“Coach Crane has the program going in the right direction and I’m very excited to be a part of that,” stated Cowgill. “The last two years I’ve witnessed how good the school is and how well the women’s basketball program is run.”

Prior to working with the Ladies, Cowgill served as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Kearney and an assistant coach with Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Mo., in 2006.

Cowgill graduated from Missouri State in 2006 with a bachelor of science degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. While with the Bears she served as team co-captain in her junior and senior seasons, leading Missouri State to the 2005 Missouri Valley Conference Championship and the 2005 WNIT Championship.

During her senior season she led the nation in three-point shooting percentage (.532, 74-139) and was second in the nation her junior season (.471, 65-138).

In her first season with the Bears, she was named Missouri Valley Newcomer of the Year, while helping the team to the 2004 regular season and conference championships. Cowgill also earned the 2005 Team Senior Award and was an academic all-conference member.

Before joining the Bears in 2003-04, the Grand Island, Neb., native played her first two collegiate seasons at the University of Nebraska where she was named team captain for her sophomore season (2001-02).

A 2000 graduate of Grand Island Catholic Central High School, Cowgill excelled in three sports, being named Nebraska’s Athlete of the Year for the 1999-2000 school year. During that year, Cowgill was named to Nebraska’s Super State First Team in basketball, the all-state volleyball first team, and was the state champion at No. 2 singles in tennis. Cowgill is also the state’s second all-time leading scorer.

Her responsibilities with the Westerwinds will include floor coaching of guards, team travel, recruiting, scouting, and day-to-day operations.

Winds beat Drake....

....3-1 and advance to an elimination game with Depaul tomorrow. It sounded like that they did not come ready to play. And for that, we have to hold our coaching staff and senior leadership responsible.

This was the first time in the tournament history that a #7 seed has won. So diappointing.

Seventh-Seeded UMKC Upsets No. 2 Western Illinois, 62-55
Courtesy: The Summit League
Release: 03/08/2008

TULSA, Okla. – Seventh-seeded UMKC out-shot No. 2-seed Western Illinois by more than 20 percent in a 62-55 upset in the quarterfinals of The Summit League Championship Saturday.

UMKC shot 50 percent from the field, compared to the 28 percent of Western Illinois. The Kangaroos also edged the Westerwinds on the boards, 36-35.

Alysa Klein led all players with 25 points on 12-of-14 shooting. Marta Waalen posted her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Chazny Morris added 25 points for UMKC.

Gina Hugelier paced Western Illinois with 17 points, while Nicole Myers added 12.

The Kangaroos used hot shooting to take a seven-point first half lead, 28-21. UMKC, which led by as many as 10, connected on 13-of-21 (62 percent) from the field, compared to the 21 percent (6-of-29) of Western Illinois. Klein was 7-of-8 from the field to lead all players with 14 points in the frame.

In the second half, UMKC extended its lead to 13 in just over five minutes and never looked back, never leading by less than six points.

The Kangaroos will face the winner of the IUPUI-Southern Utah game on Sunday.

NOTES:

UMKC is the only No. 7 seed to win a women’s tournament game. In 2005, UMKC defeated No. 2 Valparaiso, 59-49 at the John Q. Hammons Arena at the UMAC and advanced all the way to the championship game (L, 42-48 to ORU). Current head coach, Candace White-Whitaker was an assistant coach, while seniors Alysa Klein, Lindsay Fields and Marta Waalen were freshman.

The Kangaroos shot a season-high 62 percent from the field in the first half. UMKC shot 50 percent from the field for the game.

UMKC claimed its first win at a neutral site this season. The Kangaroos are now 1-1 on the year at neutral sites.

Western Illinois is 5-15 when trailing at halftime, compared to 8-1 when leading at the half.

The Westerwinds went to the free throw line eight times in the first half (8-for-8) compared to zero by UMKC and WIU was still trailing by seven points at halftime. For the game, Western was 17-for-21 from the charity stripe, while UMKC was 14-for-22.

This marked the first time UMKC and Western Illinois have played in the league tournament. In regular season play, WIU held a 2-0 advantage this season.

The Westerwinds fall to .500 (5-5) all-time in the league tournament quarterfinals under head coach Leslie Crane.

White-Whitaker notches her first post-season victory of her head coaching career.

Marta Waalen recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

QUOTES:

Western Illinois Head Coach Leslie Crane

Opening thoughts: I felt like we played much better second half, we played even with them. We just got down too far in the second half. We didn’t shoot the ball. When you shoot 28 percent in the game, you’re not going to beat too many people so I think that was a big factor tonight.

On defending Alysa Klein: We didn’t have enough help side on her and we didn’t pressure the ball well enough, but I felt like we did a much better job of that in the second half. But it’s like Nicole (Myers) said, they were in bad positions.

We saw our weakness tonight because our interior with a couple of our kids was not good. I thought Nicole Myers really played well, played solid. She probably did the best job she’s ever done on Klein, and scoring-wise taking it in there.

On the team’s offensive struggles: We did some good things defensively, but our situation was that you aren’t going to beat anybody shooting 28 percent. That’s all there is to it. We’ve been shooting well, we’ve been doing well, but it just didn’t fall tonight.

We were a team and have been a team all year long that if we are going to win games we have to shoot the ball in the hole. And it’s been difficult.

We told them to be aggressive and to attack the bucket because every time we did they fouled us. We went to the free throw line 21 times and so we wanted to attack them because they playing a match-up and kind of backing off and daring us to shoot it, and then we told them to attack and pull up and shoot short jumpers.

On the play of her reserves: It was my second five that got us within reach. They’re the ones that came rallying back. Nicole Myers, Lindsay Wutt, Sam Quigle, those kids that wanted it, they had the heart and they were the spark plugs tonight. They did a nice job when they were out on the floor.

On the play of UMKC’s Marta Waalen: The last two times we played I don’t think she was that efficient. The truth of the story is that if you’re going to let Alysa Klein score 25 points you’re going to get beat.

On UMKC’s defense: They were doing the same things defensively; we just were not adjusting.

On her team’s perceived lack of intensity: It wasn’t what it needed to be, especially from our starting five. It got better as the game progressed, but I was very disappointed in that. It’s hard to understand sometimes. Our mental toughness was very lacking tonight.

Forward Nicole Myers

On trying to guard Alysa Klein: She was able to get on the block and post us up. There were times when we were up front and she was at the elbow and we shouldn’t have been and there were times when she sealed us and we didn’t jump her in.
Winds down J-Hawks

Congrats Ladies,

Western victories have been scarce of late. Losing Gina Hugelier (Senior) certainly played a big part in the Winds loss on Monday to IP-Fort Wayne. Gina went down with a leg injury with 4 minutes to go in Saturday's loss to Oakland. No word on when she may be able to return.

The Winds are now tied for first place in the Summit with South Dakota State (7-2). Behind us is Oakland and IP-Fort Wayne (6-3). The Winds beat South Dakota State when the two teams played in Macomb. They will play again in Brookings, SD, on Feb 9th.

The Winds have two home games coming up:
Saturday, Feb 2nd vs (Southern Utah). Double-header game with the Men.
Monday, Feb 4th vs UMKC.

Leatherneck softball loaded and ready for Bear!

Heard Holly at halftime of the women's game, has a ton of talent returning and luckily recruited a very good catcher from Marist to fill in for the ACL injury to last year's starter and one of this year's captains. Pitching staff is very deep and experienced, good quickness in the infield, will hit and slap, and steal, and will not only be a force in the Summit, but also against the Major schools. For some reason, I think it just may be easier to challenge schools in the Big Ten and Big 12 in softball than in basketball! Not sure why that is?

Baseball should also be good! Hyman is really a mover and shaker and boy does it help to have the facility WIU now has for baseball. Wonder if the enthusiasm we are seeing in football recruiting has anything to do with the east stands??

PS. "That's all it was. It wasn't working out, and I didn't think it was going to work out. And, I just think she thought the same thing.

"I just felt like it was time for me to move on," she added.

While she had originally planned to compete in both basketball and track and field at Western, her path changed slightly with that announcement.

Harris contacted track and field coach Mike Stevenson after her departure from the Westerwinds' program to express her wish to compete with the team this season rather than redshirting like the original plan entailed.

"She was just really eager to be involved in the program right away," Stevenson said. "And, the way things had ended with her and basketball, she was pretty fired up."

"I'm hungry," Harris said. "I didn't feel like I was used in basketball. I want to be somewhere where I can contribute to WIU as a whole. I feel like now my talent, my athleticism is getting used. Her responsibilities at Western included recruiting, daily operations, game preparation, and working with the perimeter players and forwards.

“We have left the option open for Jill to return to Western at a later date if she chooses to,” said Crane.

Current graduate assistant Rita Castans has been named as interim assistant coach and Becky Tyo has rejoined the staff as a graduate assistant coach. Tyo was a member of the Westerwinds’ basketball team and staff from 1999-2007. She was a four-year starter for Western from 1999 to 2003. She then became a graduate assistant coach for one season before being named assistant coach in 2004. Could very well be the best team in
the conference, as All-conference midfielders Ashley Hoch, Bess Rapp, and Misako Inaba and
defender Robyn Ruypers led the way, as all-freshmen Caitlin Barrett and Keeley Murray
impressed the conference.
What to expect: Former Head Coach Kevin Sherry on this team: “We outperformed our
resources last year by getting to the tournament championship game and are hopeful we can do
something similar this season. We tried some new things out this spring and gave a lot of players
a chance to prove themselves. Some of the ideas worked and some didn't.”
Who to watch: Ashley Hoch, broke school records for assists in a season and career in just her
sophomore season. Chinaka Lymyork, incoming freshman defender has won national
championships at Providence HS in Trinidad trained with the U-19 national team. Misako Inaba,
scored multiple game-winning goals last year and is a multi-dimensional player.
My prediction: This under-funded, over-performing team has the moxie to make a splash in the
Summit League. Look for the Westerwinds to bag a two seed in the conference tourney along
with ten to 12 wins this year.
Volleyball
http://www.freespaces.com/rabbitdenreader/microsoft%20word%20-%20mid-con%20volleyball%20preview.pdf
Western Illinois
14-15 last year
When to see them: September 28 in Frost Arena, or November 3 in Macomb, IL.
Overview of team: Last season, inconsistency plagued Western Illinois, as they struggled to find a
pattern for success, but they played well in conference, only losing to Oral Roberts and Valparaiso.
Losing hurts and so does the loss of two all-conference players. But Coach Kym McKay’s squad not only
returns co-player of the year, right-side hitter Ashley Baker, all-freshman middle hitter, Erin Frick, along
with depth and experience for the 2007 season.
What to expect: Coach McKay on her team: “We will have more underclassmen than upperclassman and
will have a similar mix of veteran and rookie experience on the floor. We have good teammate
relationships; however, we need to make sure that we take care of business on the court.”
Who to watch: Ashley Baker, a dynamic lefty who can dominate a game with her fast swings, big blocks,
and tough jump serve. Erin Frick, finished 3rd in the conference in blocks per game as a freshman. Amy
Sauerwein, makes great defensive plays and is the hardest hitter on the team; she doesn’t standout, but is a
tremendous asset to the team
My prediction: Look for them to be a three/four seed in the conference tourney. Seventeen is a number
that stands out to me, look for them to get either that many wins or that many losses.
Crane & Co.

What kind of year are they expecting? I also am reporter for the soccer and volleyball team for the student news paper. I sent an email to your soccer and volleyball coach and got an interesting response from the soccer coach. It's apparent there must be some sort of funding problem with the soccer program. I was wondering if someone could answer this question for me because I am working on a conference preview for soccer and volleyball and need some more info on your soccer team. This is the question I have:

What 3 players (current, or incoming) should the fans pay extra attention to.

If i could get some sort of response from some people who know a lot about the team that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Asst Coach Becky Tyo Leaves!

The WESTERN Athletics Dept is reporting that Westerwinds Asst Basketball Coach, Becky Tyo, has left the team at the end of April to "pursue further educational opportunities". Her replacement has already been named.

Becky was a great player for 4 years at WESTERN. She was a great addition to Coach Crane's staff. She will be missed.

Jill Lewis will begin her duties as assistant coach at Western Illinois on June 4.

Allen County (Kan.) Community College head coach Jill Lewis has been hired as assistant coach on the Western Illinois University women’s basketball staff, head coach Leslie Crane announced today.

“Coach Lewis is very enthusiastic about being a member of our staff,” said Crane. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be beneficial to our program. She did a tremendous job at Allen County with a limited roster and limited resources, and we are definitely excited to have her join Western Illinois.”

Lewis served as head coach and assistant athletics director for Allen County last season, leading the Lady Red Devils to a 14-16 record and an 8-10 conference mark. She was previously the head coach at the University of Arkansas-Monticello where she compiled a two-year record of 22-29 from 2002-04, including a 13-11 mark in her first season.

Lewis began her coaching career as a student assistant at Texas El Paso, where she was an all-WAC selection and member of the all-WAC Defensive Team in 1997. After working one year as a juvenile officer, she returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach from 1999-2001. She then spent the 2001-02 season as an assistant at Henderson State before landing her first head coaching job.

At Western Illinois, Lewis’ responsibilities will include on-floor coaching and day-to-day operations of the program, as well as a heavy emphasis on recruiting.

Lewis replaces Becky Tyo who resigned April 30 to pursue further educational opportunities.

What's up with softball?

Did I see they are 3-11. And Sam Quigle only plays a few minutes each game. I don't know if she is on a time-restriction. So that only really would only leave 9 "full-time" players.

Fantastic !!!!

Good work in beating ORU! There is some good young talent on this team, but absolutely NO point guard. Way too much dribbling and when post players get open, the guards either don't see them or get the pass to them too late.

Eilon Ward

Does anyone know what happened to her Coach Crane was talking about her being a big part of the team this year and I see she is not listed on the roster anymore.

Zane...

i saw where Zane Teilane was playing with Detroit of the WNBA in the preseason but now is on the Washington Mystics roster....anyone know the story or how she ended up in Washington? hope her rookie season goes well!!!
