One of the comments was that there were 20 new faces at the first baseball meeting of the season along with a new coach. Stan did a great job recruiting this group, now Mike V. is gonna get them to be the surprise team of the year. Discipline!!!!!!! I really think that that was what was missing in the past! I think Stan put up with some antics that Mike will not stand for. Sounds like he is organized and in control. I compared the lineup from the first 3 games we played last year to the lineup from this year and found only one position player the same. Now don't get me wrong, alot of the starters from last year were seniors so even Stan would have had a lot of new faces in the lineup. But holy cow, did they his the crap out of the ball yesterday and today. The pitching staff will come along in time and MV go as many pitchers into the game as he could. The Necks are 2-1!!!!! Stan would have played Oklahoma for four games and the Necks would be 0-4. I like the fact that Mike's gonna build this in a consistent manner. Stan took the program to the next step, Mike is gonna take them to the next level!

New baseball coach a real find!

For all of the grief that has been sent in TV's way this last week, I think he did a great job finding the guy to replace Coach Hyman. He definitely has the credentials to take the program to the next level, that is of course if there is enough moola to go around in the near future!

Congrats to Men's Soccer!

The Men's Soccer Team had a great year.

They won the Summit Conference Tournament and went on to the NCAA Tournament.

They fell 2-1 to #24 Drake in Des Moines on Thursday night.

Congrats to all for an exciting year!

You all should be ashamed!

Lets see, the field is crappy, the stands are antiquated, the west side needs to be done, our offense is crap, our defense (well they are much better), we need a new coach, we need a new AD, our radio station stinks, yada yada yada!

But, not one comment regarding our men's soccer championship and NCAA berth! NCAA berth!!!
If this were Bradley, the PJstar would be going bonkers with articles and would be ready to take a picture spread at the pairings announcement at 4:30! "I've been to a couple of sectionals now. I knew that if I went out there and played my game, I'd be able to compete. It's just an indescribable feeling."
Peterman shot a 70-72-142 to finish the tournament in a three-way tie with 2009 Big Ten individual champion Eric Chun and former University of Illinois All-American Patrick Nagle. Peterman, the 2008 Summit League individual champion, said a few missteps by Chun and Nagle opened the door for him. Nagle shot a tournament-low 67 in the opening round only to follow it up with a 75 in round two while Chun bogeyed his very last hole of the tournament to force the playoff.
The players each shot par on the first playoff hole before Peterman hit his tee shot six feet from the hole on the second playoff hole. Chun and Nagle both missed the green on their tee shots and eventually shot pars on the hole. Peterman knocked in the birdie putt to win the tournament and a earn a spot playing against Woods and Mickelson - for real this time.
"I had played against tough competition like this before, but I don't think I've come out on top," Peterman said of the sectional. "I can't say enough about the family support I've had out here. I had my dad on the bag. My mom and sister (Western Illinois golfer Tara Peterman) were here. I had a few uncles. I've had so much support here and at home."
Peterman said the win ranks up with his 2008 Summit League individual championship when he also led the Leathernecks to the team title.
"That is what I came to Western to do was to win a conference championship," Peterman said. "This is right up there with it. It's unbelievable to qualify for the U.S. Open at (age) 21. It definitely doesn't happen every day."
Heading in to the U.S. Open, Peterman said he is just hoping to go out and soak up the experience.
"Honestly, I have no expectations. I'm just going to go out there and enjoy it," Peterman said.
And while he isn't holding his breath, he is hoping to draw a big name to be paired with.
"Obviously you want to go for the top guy - Tiger," Peterman said. "But all of those guys are amazing. It will be an honor to play with any of them."
The 156-man field will have 14 amateurs, the most for the U.S. Open this decade.
The field now has 155 players. One spot has been set aside in case someone wins the St. Jude Classic for his second PGA Tour victory in the last year. Otherwise, the last spot will go to the first alternate.
The USGA has not decided who that alternate will be.
Swimming Coach Quits !!

Sean Raffile resigns as Western Illinois head swimming and diving coach

Western Illinois University Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine has announced the resignation of head swimming and diving coach Sean Raffile.

"I am appreciative of what Sean has done to continue the success of our swimming and diving programs," said Van Alstine. "He proved he can coach as evidenced by our team's successes in the pool."

In his only year at Western Illinois Raffile was named The Summit League's 2009 Women's Coach of the Year, guiding the Westerwinds to a second-place finish at the conference championships. Two swimmers won events at the meet while a total of 13 earned all-conference awards. A pair of divers competed in the NCAA Zone Championships and three swimmers qualified for USA Swimming's Short Course Nationals. In addition, 95 percent of the squad achieved lifetime bests, 12 school records were broken, two new Brophy Pool marks were set, and 20 other performances ranked among the school's all-time top-10 list. In the classroom, the men's team achieved a 2.96 grade point average and the women recorded a 3.24 team GPA.

"Western Illinois has provided me with an opportunity to prove that I can successfully and simultaneously coach both a men's and women's Division I program," said Raffile. "I am grateful for the experience I have gained and the small part I was given in the history of the swimming and diving program at Western. I hope the best for the program and the quality student-athletes that Western attracts."

"I certainly respect Sean's desire to return closer to home," said Van Alstine. "We wish him nothing but happiness in his personal and professional endeavors."

Hired in August 2008, Raffile leaves Western Illinois with eight years of coaching experience, including five at the Division I level. Prior to coming to Macomb he was the head coach at Wagner College for three seasons and had served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Georgia.

Is our baseball team this bad?

Just got swept at Southern Utah after giving up 13 runs to Bradley and previously swept by Centenary. Gave up 22 runs and 18 runs to SUU. I really am beginning to question Stan Hyman's ability to recruit and coach. He's done a great job with scheduling, fund raising, and the new ball park, but they're not very good. 7-21 with a team ERA of 9.77. When you give up an average of 10 runs a game it's pretty tough to win.

Western Courier Baseball Article

Go to the Courier website and click on the article about Radz walking out. "I'm not going to look back on anything with bad memories."

The Leathernecks hold a 8-21 record this year, posting a 4-7 mark in conference play, and head coach Stan Hyman said that the reason for Radz's decision was the frustration of a losing season piled on top of the assistant coach's desire to move on.

"It was a personal decision," Hyman said.

"Tom has been with me for 10 years. At the beginning of the season he had contacted me that he wanted to go in a different direction, like he did with journalism, and get back to his roots in Chicago.

"I asked him to stay on for the year, and he said he'd gladly do that. I think that there were some personal things that made him decide that now was a better time than at the end of the season and I respect that," Hyman continued.

Radz, the 'Necks pitching coach, watched his staff allow 10 or more runs 11 times this season.

"I'm not upset with the decision," Hyman said. "I understand a lot of situations surrounding it. It was a frustrating season for him. He has done a terrific job. He always gave 110 percent and in that regard I'm going to miss coaching with him, I already do."

Hyman said that on top of Radz's influence in working with the pitchers in everyday exercises, setting up practice schedules and personal routines, Radz would be most missed for his dedication to scouting.

"It's a big loss, he is a tremendous coach," Hyman said. "He did more homework and more research and was more prepared than any coach in Division 1, and that's a big statement. (Radz) meant a lot to this ball club and it just means that everybody is going to have to pick it up a little."

As far as future plans, Radz sees himself ready to assume a head coaching position but has not made any decisions to his next move.

"Should a position open up that is an assistant position at another level, that isn't something I would be totally against," Radz said. "My options right now are open to anything, especially with the economy. My main goal is to pursue a head coaching position somewhere."

WESTERN Baseball Upsets #11 Oklahoma State!

STILLWATER, Okla.

John Sneegas picked up his first Division I victory in Western Illinois’ game two victory over No. 11 Oklahoma State, 7-4, avenging a game one loss of 30-3, at Allie P. While we didn't play as tough a schedule as these guys, we played Big 12, SEC, and Big Ten teams when I was there, and we beat them some and they beat us some. Plus our conference was tougher, with EIU, Missouri State, UIC, Northern Iowa, etc. We never gave up runs like this. I respect what Coach Hyman has done as far as facilities, fund raising, scheduling, etc., but his on the field product has been below average and he hasn't had one player drafted since he's been there.

Western Swim Coach- Coach of the Year in his first season.

Congrats to Sean Raffile who was named Coach of the Year in his first season at Western. The only thing that I have seen advertised is that the first 200 fans to each game will get free Chapstick!!

I am not kidding! That is the advertised promotion for the Oral Roberts games.

With the college not yet in session, this would have been a good time to market and promote the game to the local community. Illinois State had a $3 general admission for its games during the semester break, and they were able to sell-out Redbird Arena for the Creighton game.

I thought that WESTERN could certainly do something similar. Or is the Athletic Dept happy with empty balconies ????

It really makes one question the current marketing philosophy and the overall leadership of the Athletic Dept.

And just this week, WESTERN Athletics sent out a letter to the WESTERN Athletic Club, WESTERN staff, and WESTERN students to encourage attendance at the games.

This would have been a great opportunity to market the game with discount tickets and maybe even some specials at the concession stand. So we are going to have to depend on the Macomb community to keep the enthusiasm going until the Purple Haze returns.

Coach P's Pre-Game Comments

I was shocked by comments made by Coach Patterson in a pre-game interview on WJEQ Radio.

Coach P said that even if WESTERN were to lose the game vs Youngstown, he would still call it a "successful season" because we would have a winning record (6-5) and finish in the top half of the conference even with a loss.

How can that be acceptable ??????????

Surely we are not accepting mediocrity as an acceptable season outcome.

This was suppose to be "our year".

And look how it ended.

At one time (under Coach Hendrickson) we were 5-2 and tied for first in the conference.

And then under Coach Patterson, we were 1-3.

Someone needs to be explain this football season to the fans.

Coach P's Return

WESTERN coach returning to sideline!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By KEVIN CAPIE
of the Peoria Journal Star
Oct 28, 2008 @
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Western Illinois football coach Don Patterson will return to the sidelines on Saturday when the 12th-ranked Leathernecks host No. 5 Northern Iowa.

Patterson did not coach the first seven games of the season while receiving treatment for, and recovering from, tonsillar cancer

“It’s a slow process to recover, but it has been six weeks (since the end of treatment),” Patterson said by phone on Tuesday night. “I’ve made some progress and went back to see the doctor last Tuesday.”

It was then that the 10th-year head coach and was cleared to return to work, starting with the preparation for Saturday’s game.

Patterson isn’t stepping into the season totally blind. Even when he was still undergoing the chemotherapy and radiation treatment, he was following the team.

Since returning in mid-September from Iowa City, where he received the treatment at the University of Iowa Medical Center, Patterson has had more of a presence in the Western Hall football offices.

“The last few weeks I’ve come in in the quiet of the night to study tape and get an idea of how the players have been playing,” Patterson said. “Now I feel that it is time to come back.”

Patterson will return for a final appointment on Dec. 15 to find out if he is cancer free. He will continue to use a feeding tube until then.

“There’s no way they can take it out until they’re certain that I’m cancer free,” Patterson said.

Patterson won’t be able to return to the normal coaching grind until likely next season.
For now, he is content with a limited schedule of afternoons and late evenings with team meetings, practices and game-planning taking up the bulk of his duties.

Offensive coordinator Mark Hendrickson, who guided the Leathernecks to the 5-2 start this season as the acting head coach, will handle the typical morning chores involving practice planning and other duties.

“Practices take longer to plan than they do to execute,” Patterson said. “It takes me a little bit to get going in the morning and Mark typically scripts those anyway.”

The biggest thing is the return to full game action. He has been on the sidelines for the past four games, but as an observer more than participant.”

“Coaching is such a part of my life, I really missed it,” Patterson said. “To miss three games was very difficult.

“It’s almost a helpless feeling not being there. That really was the hardest part.”
Parade Grand Marshalls

1959 Football Team Coaches Named Grand Marshals of WESTERN Homecoming Parade !!

A quintet of coaches who led the Western Illinois University football Leathernecks to the 1959 undefeated season and to the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) championship have been named grand marshals of Western's 2008 Homecoming Parade.

The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 near the Macomb Courthouse Square.

Lou Saban was head coach (1957-1959) of the team that is in Western's history books as the first, and only, undefeated, untied team (9-0). That year he was chosen NAIA Coach of the Year. Saban's Western teams were 20-5 during his three-year tenure, before he went on to a successful coaching career in the National Football League with the Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos. Saban was inducted into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in 1974.

Robert "Red" Miller ('50 MS-Ed '55) and Joe Collier were assistant coaches for the 1959 team before Saban tagged them to join him in the NFL. Miller was the Leathernecks football MVP in 1947, 1948 and 1949, when he was the team captain. He went on to coach 24 years in the NFL. Miller was inducted into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in 1974. He also has received the Alumni Achievement Award (1973) and the Distinguished Alumni Award (1974).

Collier also coached professional football for 28 years, including 20 years with the Denver Broncos. He is considered by many National Football League experts to be one of the finest defensive coaches of the game. Collier was inducted into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in 1989.

Art Dufelmeier was an assistant coach from 1949-1959, then Western's head football coach from 1960-1968. He also had a highly successful high school coaching career at Havana (IL). Dufelmeier was inducted into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame for his WIU coaching in 1986. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005 as a member of the 1953-1954 Leatherneck basketball team. That squad, guided by Coach Stix Morley, earned Western's first NAIA national tournament berth, placing second in the 32-team field.

The late Guy Ricci, who was an assistant coach for the '59 team, is a posthumous honoree. He also served as baseball coach (1955-1969) and was an assistant basketball coach for 15 years before he was named head basketball coach (1969-1973). Ricci was inducted into the Western Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987.

Western's Homecoming Parade will start from the Macomb Courthouse Square at the corner of Washington and Lafayette streets heading north. It will proceed along the South and East Side Square and exit on to Carroll St., heading west. The parade will turn right (north) on to Clsy St., then left on to Adams St., passing both Sherman Hall and the Alumni House. The parade will end in front of the Corbin-Olson residence halls.

Baseball Alumni Game

Alumni game to be featured homecoming weekend!!

The alumni game will be included with the Purple & Gold World Series and the annual 100-inning game!!

Western Illinois baseball will hold an alumni game on Homecoming weekend, Sunday, October 19. Game time is 11 a.m. at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

“Response from baseball alumni has been terrific,” said Western Illinois head baseball coach Stan Hyman. “Players from the ‘50s to the present are planning on playing or at least watching the game. It’s a great opportunity to see the new stadium, as well as catch up with former teammates and fellow baseball alumni.”

Following the alumni game, the 2008 varsity team will conclude its “Purple & Gold World Series” and 100-inning game fundraiser. All games are open to the public and attendance is free. A picnic reception will take place for baseball alumni in between games.

Due to construction of Boyer Stadium and field improvements during the last two falls, alumni games had been put on hold. Previously, such baseball greats as Rick and Paul Reuschel, Bob Watson, and Rick Short all played in alumni games.

All Western Illinois baseball alumni are encouraged to participate or attend this year’s event. Former players should contact the baseball office at 309/298-1521 to confirm their attendance.
Western Beats Ranked team!

Just got back from Shea Soccer Stadium.

Pretty good crowd, about 1,800 to 2000 I would guess. Then he added that he hoped that the west side renovations could be completed in "a few years".

I had thought that the plan was to start the work on the west side after the end of this 2008 season with the goal of it being completed in time for the 2009 season.

That does not appear to be the current time-line.

Tim Van Alstine mentioned that the plans for the west side would include a building that would be constructed behind the grandstand. That building would house all the football affiliated offices that are now in Western Hall.

But can't we go ahead and get the grandstand replaced and do the office building later ?????

I was on campus this past weekend (August 16/17). The east side of Hanson Field looks great! Then you look at the west side--something needs to be done with it ASAP. It looks very antiquated now.

At the very least, can't we get it painted ????? The curent yellow "sandstone" color looks awful. A coat of purple paint would do wonders to make it look better.

But we WESTERN fans cannot wait until the funding is in place for this football office building. The west side of Hanson Field needs to be renovated now. Let's not wait any longer.

New Coach?

Has anyone heard about any new coaches for at Western? My Mom has dimentia and I was not really too sure if she would remember me when we arrrived basically because our phone conversations have not gone well recently. But, she was very excited when my wife and I walked in, she may not know exactly who I am in the fabric of the universe, but she knows that I have been an important part of her life, and to tell you the truth, thats all that matters!

I was sad to hear about Coach P also. I had a bought of skin cancer a couple of years ago, nothing serious, they just cut it off, but still, the C word really gets my attention. I am glad they caught this and wish him a speedy recovery. I think the boys, Coach H, and the staff will respond to this situation in a positive manner. Just have to have him back for the start of the playoffs!

So, the press guide is on line. Once again it is thick and full of facts! Funny, if you click on the last section, and go to Target Western Forward, there is a picture of the future west side of Hanson Field displayed, the same one that I use to announce my "opinions!" (Not sure what the correct name for it is!) This is the first time I have seen it since it was available on line at the WIU Athletic Website for a few weeks, and then removed about 3 years ago. I think it is definitely a part of the "capital campaign!" With the PAC about to be come a reality (as soon as Blago and the boys pull there heads out of there butts) maybe the west side rehab is closer then we may think!

WESTERN vs Arkansas Pre-Game Tailgate

August 30, 2008

WESTERN Alumni & Friends Pregame Tailgate--WESTERN vs. Arkansas

Time: All Day
Location: Univerity of Arkansas, The Gardens Gazebo

Description: Join us for a alumni & friends pre-game tailgate when the WESTERN Leathernecks take on the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.

3:00 p.m. Tailgate
6:00 p.m. Football Game

Social: $12.00
Social & Football Ticket: $57.00

Tailgate will be located in "The Gardens" in a Gazebo.
