There is also a reserve player called a "twelfth man" who is used should a player be injured during play. The twelfth man is not allowed to bowl, bat, wicket keep or captain the team. His sole duty is to act as a substiture fielder. The original player is free to return to the game as soon as they have recovered from their injury.

To apply the law and make sure the cricket rules are upheld throughout the game there are two umpires in place during games. Umpires are responsible for making decisions and notifying the scorers of these decisions. Two umpires are in place on the playing field while there is also a third umpire off the field who is in charge of video decisions. This is where the call is too close for the on field umpires and they refer it to the third umpire who reviews slow motion video replays to make a decision.

Soccer goalie training tips

1. General fitness:
As much as they might like to skip it, goalkeepers are required to take part in the punishing cross country runs and sprint sessions that the outfield players are also put through!

2. Weights work:
Goalkeepers also do a lot of gym work to build up their strength and general fitness. Goalkeepers, of course, rely on being agile and carrying weight reduces their effectiveness. Strength of wrists is also vital when dealing with powerfully hit shots.

3. Dealing with crosses:
It's common for a club's first choice and reserve goalkeepers to work together in training. One goes in goal and the other delivers ball after ball into the penalty area for his team-mate to come and deal with. This is a vital element of a goalie's game and repetition is the best way to build confidence.

4. Shot stopping:
An obvious one. Another player (or players) takes multiple shots and the goalkeeper tries to keep them out. This should cover both long range and shorter range shots, plus penalties.

5. Speed of reactions:
Perhaps the most important attribute for a goalkeeper isn't their ability to simply save a shot but how quickly they can then react to make the next save. Goalkeeper training should always include a session where the keeper is asked to make rapid saves, one after another. This is achieved by throwing or kicking multiple balls at them from a short distance, in rapid succession.

6. Goal kick and throwing practice:
Goalkeepers have to take goal kicks, both from their hands or from the ground. A faulty kick can lead to a goal-scoring chance for the other team, so it's important to practice this skill as well as the saving-related training drills.
Additionally, it's worth practicing throwing the ball to a team-mate. This is a skill that can help your team launch a rapid counter attack but if mistimed it can backfire badly!

7. Ball work:
Unless you happen to be a maverick South American goalkeeper, with a penchant for dribbling the ball upfield, it's unlikely that you will be required to be hugely skilled on the ball. However, you will need to control back passes and at times you will need to clear the ball by foot or possibly pick out a team mate with a pass. For this reason, it's vital that goalkeepers don't ignore basic ball skills work.

8. Study of opposition:
Okay, this one's just for professional level players. They will study opposition penalty takers to see which side they favour when taking penalties. Sometimes it's these kind of small details that can make the difference at the very top level.
A Move to Division 2 ???

Today's (1-22-10) editorial in the Western Courier presents the pro's and con's of moving to Divison 2. It appears that the Western Courier favors this move.

Is it time for a booth review?

By: WC Editorial Board
Posted: 1/22/10

When thinking about why students pick Western as their university, there are multiple factors that they tend to consider. One factor that does not seem to affect their decision at all is Western's athletic performance.

Students come to Western for a variety of reasons. Some visit from surrounding towns because of the comfort of staying close to their loved ones, while others pick Macomb to get as far away as possible from their family life.

The LEJA program is huge, and draws a great deal of students. Also the affordability of this state school with a guaranteed four-year tuition lock attracts those looking for higher values in higher education.

But what about athletics? Aside from those students who come here to play, are there really any students who pick Western based on factors such as football performances?

Currently we play in Division I, but let's face the facts: there is seldom a story in Courier Sports that speaks of a stunning performance and a well-fought victory.

There is no finger-pointing or criticism here, but why are we in a division where we consistently seem to struggle?

Is it to draw crowds? That's doubtful, because the stereotype almost rings true that for many students the end of the tailgate indicates it's time to go home.

Is it to have those few players that make it to the professional level carry the Leatherneck name? Maybe we are missing something, but the college a pro player attended seems to get about as much attention as how a political scientist did in art class.

So now, we throw an idea out there, more of a "what if" scenario than anything. How about moving down a division? Sure, it might seem like throwing in the towel, but it would certainly make us more competitive, because from the way things are looking now, it seems like we're trying to get by in a division that is simply too stacked to compete with.

This could be a positive move for Western athletics. More winning seasons would probably draw larger crowds to the games, it would increase our school morale, and it would give the athletic department a chance to reevaluate how to improve some of our ailing performances.

On the other side of the coin, perhaps this idea is terrible. It would most likely cut down on alumni donations, and by facing smaller schools we would lose the larger crowds the big names bring along.

Another factor to consider is reputation. Sports statistics are a big deal to a great many people, and maybe Western does need to battle it out in a higher tier in order to compete with other state schools.

Still, Western has not made a name for itself in athletics, and as hard as the student-athletes work, a losing season is never the goal of any teams.

Perhaps a step down is a bad idea, maybe in a season or two the teams can come back strong and make the students and alumni proud. But a weaker division, more tallies in the win column, and games that could boost the moral of the student population might be just what the athletic program needs.

There's no shame in not being the best at a game played by children in schoolyards, but being in Division II where the games are more competitive and enjoyable to watch might be a wise decision.

The Demise of the Purple Haze

What on earth has gone on with the Purple Haze section this year ???

In its first year during the 2008-2009 season, the Purple Haze had a designated section at Western Hall that came with purple t-shirts that were on each seat in that section.

This year, the Purple Haze section started off behind the Western bench. But it has been moved again to behind the east basket. And there are no purple t-shirts this year.

Looks like Western Athletics is letting this group fade away.

So the Purple Haze will soon join the other groups that have come and gone: Rocky's Renegades and the Purple Posse.
Indi-awful State

So today I looked at Indiana State's last few football seasons out of curiosity. Has it really been since the middle of the '06 season that they won a game? I mean, talk about kicking someone while they're down, but does this team deserve to compete at the level they are currently competing at? If you're going to compete at the FBS level with those results, then expect the criticism.

The funny thing is that I recollect some of our better teams struggling against Indiana State over the past few seasons.

WIUS-FM Signal Strength

When WIUS-FM (88.3) was created in 1983, its mission was to be the "campus" radio station. The University's original radio station WIUM-FM (91.3) was then free to be a full-time NPR affiliate.

Based on the "campus" radio station concept, the signal strength was established at 120 watts which was enough to cover the campus and the community of Macomb. It was never the mission of WIUS to be a "regional" radio station.

But now with the WIUS being the radio station for WESTERN Athletics, that concept has changed. And the University is now looking at changing its mission from a "campus" station to a "regional" station. That would allow WIUS to increase its signal strength to cover a larger area of Western Illinois.

That may take a year to accomplish. But the University will be working at boosting the signal of WIUS so that it may serve a larger geographic area.

Deragatory comments about WIU on Bisonville.com

I sometimes visit our fargo friends fan board Bisonville.com

Ran across this thread the other day.

<a href="http://www.bisonville.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17007" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.bisonville.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17007

BearsCountry
Senior Member
Dreams in Green and Gold Join Date: Aug 2006
Posts: 116

Re: illinois state and missouri state

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quote:
OK, so I did a little research in the Bears media guide about their football. MSU is 128-134-2 in its games since 1985 when it joined the Missouri Valley. They are 63-86-1 in the conference during that time. They have finished first once and tied for first once in the last 24 years. I guess I would agree that MSU had a lot of potential during those years but they never live up to any of it. This is a top notch program -- wow.

You live in Missouri, you know how Mizzou has been the past three decades. How many years did everyone talk about them finally turning the corner. And they finally kept the other schools out of recruiting in Missouri and look where they are now in the Big 12. Its the same thing with us. No arguing about our record over the time span bc its true. We haven't been very good. But I don't see us ever being a power at the FCS level - too many teams rely on transfers to be successful. I think its hurts the MVC come playoff time bc the majority of our schools don't take on lots of transfers sans WIU.

Like I said before it will be us and Illinois State that will make the push to FBS for the MVC. Mainly to give our programs a leg up on the others, that we haven't competed with to try to up them like UNI and SIU. If we do I expect NDSU to follow us. So I don't really see how trying to better your program is a laughing matter.

Hmmmm. last I rememer the taking on transfers thing was a Randy Ball thing, that if memory serves left WIU a decade ago for Southwest Missouri State.

This Bears Country cat seems to have some chip on his shoulder against WESTERN, I have noticed easily 2 dozen deragatory commments made by this person on AGS. Players chosen in the CFL Draft are still eligibile to compete in their senoir seasons.

Western Illinois University head football coach Don Patterson met with members of the local media Tuesday morning, sharing his thoughts on the spring football season and previewing Saturday’s annual Bruce Craddock Memorial Scrimmage.

The Leathernecks will conclude the four-week long spring practice season with an intrasquad scrimmage at 1:05 p.m. Saturday on Hanson Field. Similar to the past several seasons, the scrimmage will pit the offense (in white uniforms) against the defense (in purple) using a modified scoring system in which points are awarded for first downs on offense and defensive stops on defense, in addition to the traditional scoring rules. The scrimmage will consist of 12-minute quarters and will highlight the first teams against the second teams.

Karen Henderson, widow of former Leatherneck coach Bruce Craddock, will again be on hand to officiate the coin toss.

“Coach Craddock was and still is such an important part of Leatherneck football that we are very honored to have Karen with us each year,” said Patterson.

Craddock coached the Leathernecks from 1983-89, leading them to a 41-35-1 record before being overcome by cancer. The Gateway Football Conference’s coach of the year award is now named in his honor.

There is no admission fee for the scrimmage, however a donation to the Bruce Craddock Scholarship Fund is suggested.

Patterson quotes on spring football :
“I don’t think spring ball could have gone much better. We have had a few injuries here or there but that’s the nature of the game. I expect every last one of those players to be ready for the fall. And almost every player who was healthy going into spring ball will play this weekend.”

“We have real competition at several positions. Even with nine starters coming back on each side of the ball, and with some very experienced players returning, we are seeing some battles. Much of that is due to effective recruiting, especially on defense. Our defensive coaches haven’t made too many mistakes on recruiting and we’re starting to see the results of that.”

“This defense is even more refined than it was last fall. Coach Casey has a very good idea of how this particular group of players can play together and can carry out their schemes. They have been in the program long enough that their fundamentals are really solid right now. In that regard, we have been able to tinker more than what we could normally do in the spring.”

“One of our biggest concerns is our offensive line. We lost both guards from last year. Most people will say you need a minimum of eight solid linemen to succeed and we’re still looking for those eight.”

“It might be assumed that a team has a great opportunity to win every year. But reality is that some years you have a lot better opportunity to win than others. This is one of those years that we have a better opportunity than normal. Now we have to take full advantage of it. It’s not just going to happen. We won’t go out and have a great season just because we have 20 returning starters. It’s going to require those 20 players, as well as the other 80, to have the right attitude and put in the hard work over the summer.”

“If you look at each of the teams in the Gateway on paper and judge how good they’re going to be, it’s safe to say we appear on paper to be one of the better teams coming back. Again, that doesn’t guarantee any wins at all. There are other teams on paper that look really strong as well. North Dakota State returns seven first-team all-conference players. We all know how good they were last year and I expect them to be just as tough an opponent this year. I would expect them to likely be picked to win the conference this year.”

Spring Football Notes
• Redshirt-freshman Teague Dentino has made a successful switch from linebacker to defensive line. He has been placed in the two-deep behind senior Josh Galloway at right end for Saturday and should fill a similar role this fall.

• Another player who has seen a successful position change this spring is Terry Barney, who moved from wide receiver to defensive back and is likely to start at free safety this Saturday. Barney, at 6-foot-4, matches Bryan Cox (1987-90) as the tallest defensive back in Western Illinois’ Division I era.

• Defensive back Tim Jackson will miss the spring game due to being out of the country. He will be attending his brother’s wedding in South Korea.

• Defensive back Mike McEachern is attracting attention by the 2008 CFL Draft, held April 30. McEachern would still be eligible to compete in his senior season. His father, Ken, was an 11-year veteran defensive back in the CFL from 1974-84.

• With the departure of Will Ducey, McEachern has become the new holder for Taylor Rowan. McEachern was one of the highest-rated quarterbacks coming out of Canada when he signed with Western Illinois, but quickly found a home on the defensive side of the ball. He is the first defensive player to serve as holder in Patterson’s nine seasons.

• With only two quarterbacks in camp (sophomore Matt Barr, senior Zack Wells) the whistles on the red jerseys will be quicker than normal Saturday, a very stark contrast to last year in which the quarterbacks were live for the first time.

• Punter Chris Fuchs has been pulling double-duty this spring and will miss the scrimmage in order to fulfill his role as closer on the Leatherneck baseball team. He has allowed just four hits and four earned runs while striking out seven in 10 innings of work this spring. Place-kicker Taylor Rowan will handle the punting duties this Saturday.

• An NCAA committee is working on expanding the FCS playoffs from 16 teams to 20 teams by 2010.

This is intimidating

I'm gettin nervous

<a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=My6zyoPuopk&feature=related" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://youtube.com/watch?v=My6zyoPuopk&feature=related

I'm thinking about running....

for president on a third party ballot. Kill's deal was to run through 2011.

But in his Jackson County lawsuit - filed Feb. 5, just days before SIU's deadline for Kill to pay the money - the former coach called the payback provision illegal and unenforceable because it gave him no option to leave without penalty unless he died, became disabled, quit football or was fired.

“He never has, at any point in time, the right to just say, ‘OK, at the end of X, I just don't want to work for you anymore,”' Shari Rhode, a Carbondale attorney for Kill, said Thursday. “If he decided to become a shoe salesman, he could leave. But as long as he stayed coaching football, he can't.

“Only the university has the right to say this contract is going to end and we both walk away without you paying a penalty. That's what makes it illegal.”

If SIU had ever breached Kill's contract, the university would have been required to pay him the rest of the salary he would have earned.

Mario Moccia, Southern's athletic director, said the university included a buyout in Kill's contract because the cost of undertaking a search for a new coach on short notice - and quickly moving that coach and his nine assistants to Carbondale - can be expensive.

Moccia said that, while he believes Kill's contract is clear and that he owes the money to the university, the flap has not diminished his respect for Kill.

“What I think a lot of people overlook is that this is also a business and there are contracts and sometimes, you know, individuals don't see eye to eye on those contracts,” Moccia said.

The lawsuit also claims that the university has refused to pay Kill for 25 vacation days he said he took after he accepted the Northern Illinois job Dec. 13, less than a week after he guided the Salukis (12-2) to the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision, the former Division I-AA.

Deborah Nelson, the school's associate general counsel, said the university disputed the vacation payments because Kill no longer was with the university at the time, making him ineligible for paid vacation.

In Kill's seven seasons in Carbondale, the team went 56-32, won three straight Gateway Conference titles (2003-05) and made five consecutive postseason appearances.

“Anybody that's ever known Jerry Kill knows that he's just a good old boy. This isn't somebody who (came) looking to screw around with a university,” Rhode said “He won awards. He brought a lot of prestige and honor to the university. We're better recognized for football than we've ever been, and this is how they treat him.”

Southern has hired Dale Lennon, a former coach at North Dakota, as Kill's successor, giving him a five-year contract that will pay him $200,000 a year.

ORU just plastered....

Okie State! What an ugly mess that is. The top of Lake Ruth is completely covered with a greenish sludge. You can't see the water.

Immediate action is needed to remedy this situation. We certainly don't want it looking like that for Homecoming.

I know that there are plans to dredge the Lake. So perhaps that will help. Also, the fountain is not there this year. Perhaps the fountain helped to keep the water moving and not stagnate.

I am not a botanist.
