The CFBpalace is a great resource. Thanks for cluing me in LeatherCy and BBfan. I copy and pasted the schedule page (although the first couple games are missing the dates for some reason). Looks like after a couple of bad years of scheduling WIU is really on the ball. IMHO the next few seasons scheds. look great to me.

Hey 712: Once again, I have to ask - where are you getting your information about the Iowa State game/date. I go to the WIU web site and there is nothing about 2009 season, let alone way into the future. Where are you getting the information? Oh, by the way, our Football roster still has Sims on it and he was kicked off the team BEFORE the last game! ugh. Please, where can I go to get the information? Thanks.

Although, IA St. had a bad outcome when they played UNI and narrowly escaped with their lives a few years back playing IL St. so maybe they wouldn't be real keen on the idea.

Don't know a think other than what I hear from Sqawk fans and read or listen to on sports radio up here. Wienke's dad took the Head FB job at Waterloo West last year so he would be closer to his son at Iowa City. He resigned after one year and said he was moving back to IL.

We'll find out after Spring ball who comes out as the #2 QB for the Sqawks.

Who went with SIU instead. BUT, I'd be willing to bet the kicker that Coach P was referring to in the earlier post is Brian Egan, who hasn't signed anywhere yet. Rivals has him as the Number 1 strongest leg who hadn't signed as of a couple weeks ago. So, lets cross our fingers and hope he picks WIU over UAB, who has offered him a scolarship as well. Maybe Isiah signing elsewhere freed up a parital scholarship? Maybe then we could sweeten Egan's deal? All and all, I think the recruiting class looks pretty good... I like that we got some tall receivers finally, besides Senatus, I can't think of the last one we had. Holtschlag is a really exciting prospect, along with Carley, Hoffstetter and Samuel. We will see what shakes out, but I think my worries weren't really justified

I heard an interview today on the Boers and Bernstein show on The Score. Those of you in Chicago may be familiar. Anyways, I caught the middle/end of an interview with I believe, Gerry DiNardo who is now a Big Ten football analyst and most recently the Head Football Coach at Indiana. Both he and Dan Bernstein were going off on what a verbal commitment really means to a school.

Stlouisneck, you are into recruiting and have shared some good knowledge with us here. I know you were disappointed with Dakota Getz. What Gerry said in my own summarization is that a verbal commit is worthless. It is nothing more than a kid locking in a scholarship, knowing he has the opportunity to play at (fill in the xxxxxxx school) a school on scholarship. After that, it's fair game for the kid to "upgrade" his status and find a scholly at a bigger school or continue to remain in contact with other schools of interest.

Gerry said that if there were not an actual "Signing Day", this process would continue on and on until practices begin. All Gerry could say about a verbal commitment is that 'a man is as good as his word'.

What I took from it is that there is no reason to get excited over a verbal, and when you factor in parents, coaches, and the level of competition/playing time...a verbal commitment from a 17/18 year old means next to nothing.

It was an interesting reality check to what I had assumed after seeing all these kids switching schools at the last possible second.

All you hear about besides the starter Stanzie is Vander something the kid from Keokuk. Maybe that will change in two years.

LeatherCy - I guess you have me confused with this post... do you know something or just guessing that Wienke might look to leave Iowa.

I'm just joining the Leatherneck Football Family as a fan and I am very excited to be a part of the WIU football experience. Any advice about the blogs that can direct me to find information?
I had the opportunity to meet a lot of the coaches during a visit with my son, including Coach P. and wow what a great group. Coach P. seams to be a leader that can be looked up to by his players. I can't wait for Saturdays now. I wasn't ready to have it end yet.

Thanks to Coach P. for giving us this opportunity.

I called Coach P around 5:30 this afternoon. First thing he told me is "we aren't done yet." There may be a kicker coming yet plus some others. Coach P felt they really filled some needs.

I asked Coach P how he was doing health wise. He told me he was looking forward to getting off the feeding tube but it would be March at the earliest. I didn't realize he was still on a feeding tube. He gave a lot of credit to Coach Hendrickson for his recruiting efforts when it wasn't possible for Coach P to be there at times.

Okay folks, what do you think? The kid from Milton Wi. was listed as a Wisconsin recruit!!! Looks like we have recruited some thick, some fast, but all pretty athletic players from all over! It will take a couple of nights just to "Google" all of these kids, but as I said before, the coaching staff was pretty pleased with recruiting!

Another one bites the dust...

After receiving a scholarship offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes this weekend, it did not take long for Illinois athlete Dakota Getz to make his decision. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Getz, who had previously been committed to Western Illinois, waited to return home tonight and then made the call.

Dakota Getz is headed to Iowa.
"I let Iowa know and then I had to let Western know that I wasn't going to attend there this fall," said Getz. "I did that tonight and that was a tough call, but I think it was the right one."

Getz, who earned all-state honors this past year, saw everything that he needed to see on his official visit to Iowa City over the weekend. The two-star prospect said the chance to play in the Big Ten for the next few years was just too much to pass up.

"It's a Big Ten school and I don't really think you can turn that down," Getz said. "It's a great school academically and a great football program. It has everything that I've ever really wanted."

Freshman quarterback John Wienke, who is also from Central Illinois, served as Getz's host on the official visit this weekend. Making his first trip ever to Iowa City, the two-star prospect felt comfortable with his surroundings.

"It's bigger than where I live, but it's not too big, not too small," said Getz. "It kind of reminds me of home actually."

With signing day only a week and a half way, Getz is glad to have his final decision out of the way. Now, he can relax and focus on the basketball season and the rest of his senior year.

"It feels great," Getz said. "It was a dream of mine ever since I was very little and it finally came true, so it's a great feeling and a great opportunity."

In high school, Getz did a little bit of everything at Meridian High School, earning several honors at quarterback after throwing for 2,214 yards and rushing for another 1,667 yards on the ground as well, accounting for 47 touchdowns in all this past season. The Hawkeyes, who evaluated his hands and footwork during basketball season this year, see him developing into a tight end in college.

Getz is the sixteenth verbal commitment for Iowa in the recruiting class of 2009.

Coming into the weekend, the big question for Illinois athlete Dakota Getz is would the Iowa Hawkeyes offer a scholarship during his official visit. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Getz found out this morning during a meeting with head coach Kirk Ferentz at breakfast.

Dakota Getz picked up an offer from Iowa today.
"They offered me this morning," said Getz. "Coach Ferentz just said they've love to have me and now it's my decision to make."

Getz entered the weekend as a verbal commitment to Western Illinois. With a new scholarship offer in hand, which is his first from a major conference school, the two-star prospect will now revisit his college decision.

"I'm still thinking about it," Getz said. "Going in, I didn't want to get my hopes up and then not get the offer, so when I did, I didn't want to make a decision too fast. I should know soon though."

In high school, Getz was an all-state performer at quarterback this past season, throwing for 2,214 yards and rushing for another 1,667 yards on the ground, accounting for 47 touchdowns in all for Meridian High School. With his frame and athleticism, the Iowa coaching staff sees the multi-sport athlete growing into a tight end in college.

Getz, whose lead recruiter is Lester Erb, not only had a chance to catch up with the coaches this weekend, but also get to know some of the players as well, including one from near his hometown.

"I toured all of the facilities, ate lunch with the coaches, went over to the academic center, and then hung out with the players," said Getz. "My host was John Wienke and he's from a town about 45 minutes away from me and in our same conference actually. He said he loves it up there and it reminds him of home."

With national signing day quickly approaching, Getz hopes to make his final college decision soon, likely within the next 24 hours.

"I'm just going to sit back and think about it a little bit more and then hopefully make an educated decision," Getz said.

Another tight end prospect:

Geneva (Ill.) senior defensive tackle prospect Cory Hofstetter (6-foot-4, 245 pounds) was able to make an official visit this past weekend. Hofstetter was able to make his first official visit worth the trip when he also was able to pick up his first scholarship offer this past weekend. So who's the first school to offer Hofstetter? Is he close to making his college decision? Get the details in this latest recruiting update.

Cory Hofstetter is excited about adding his first offer from in-state WIU.

"I received my first offer this weekend from Western Illinois," Hofstetter said. "I'm on the way back right now from my official visit to Western with my parents. Overall it was a really good weekend and it feels really good to get my first offer from WIU for sure."

Hofstetter talked about his his impressions from Macomb after making his official visit.

"The official visit to WIU went well overall. I had a chance to really get to know the players and the coaches better at Western. I had a few different player host and they are all really good guys. I was able to just get a better fell for everyone at WIU and to learn more about the school and the football program. I like the fact that the school is far away but it's not too far away. I enjoyed taking tours of the school and the facilities and getting to sit down and talk with the coaches. WIU is recruiting me as a tight end prospect, which is different. I played tight end in pee wee football and I'm totally fine playing that position once again if the coaches feel that's where I'll help out the team the most."

So how close is Hofstetter to making his final college choice?

"I have a home visit tonight actually with the coaches from Northern Illinois. I'm definitely going to think pretty hard about Western Illinois and see how things go this week and I'm hoping to make a decision pretty soon."

according to the QC Times, Ben Sparkman from Rock Island, he played QB in high school but will probably play receiver or defensive back. Is being looked at by Western and Illinois St.

Also Carter Ridenour a QB-WR from Betendorf (Ia), the paper says he has a chance to walk-on at Western.

So, is anyone else getting a little worried? We really only have one commit to this point (Holtschlag) who Rivals hasn't listed, but I'm not too worried about that. It seemed like we had a few more blips on the radar at this time last year, and by the time we were a week out we had 8 commits that were widely reported. Now February 4 is only two weeks away, and WIU is going to have a lot of visitors on the 23rd, so if by this time next week there isn't a little bit more news my expectations are going to be low.

I feel that committments that are reported before signing day are a good sign for a program. Players that are confident enough in the program to announce their intentions before they have to means that the program is doing something right. I'm probably getting ahead of myself, I'll see how things look in a week.

Stltoday.com ranked their Super 30 prep prospects and only one prospect listed mentioned WIU. Devin King (DeSmet), RB-LB -6-0, 220. Also listed was Kansas, N.Ill, & New Mexico.

Last year, the Hawkeyes went into Illinois and found a tight end in Brad Herman, who played as a true freshman in 2008. This year, the Iowa coaching staff is back and may have found another one in Meridian High School's Dakota Getz, who will visit Iowa City this weekend.

Dakota Getz will visit Iowa this weekend.
"Iowa wants me to come up for an official visit this coming Saturday," said Getz. "They just want me to check out the school and everything and then go from there really."

Currently, Getz is verbally committed to Western Illinois. Iowa has not offered a scholarship at this point, but will likely discuss things further on the official visit. For Getz, it will be his first trip to Iowa City.

"I really want to see their facilities and everything," Getz said. "Being a big time program, just see what they have and how it compares. I'm looking forward to it."

Like Iowa, Western Illinois projects Getz primarily at tight end. In high school, the 6-foot-4, 210-pounder was an all-state performer at quarterback this past season, throwing for 2,214 yards and 22 touchdowns and adding another 1,667 yards and 25 touchdowns on the ground as well. This winter, the Iowa coaching staff has been down to watch Getz play basketball and will again this week to further evaluate his potential.

"I believe one of the coaches is going to come down on Tuesday to one of my basketball games," said Getz. "When they came to watch me play before, they were looking at my footwork and my hands and everything. That's what they like to see in a tight end."

While Getz is staying patient as he waits to see what happens, he also is very comfortable with his decision to attend Western Illinois should an Iowa scholarship offer not come through.

"I'm just waiting to see what happens with Iowa," Getz said. "I'm just going to see if they offer and if not, I still have Western and I'd love to go there too."

I forgot to add that Pat Devlin (transfer from Penn State) will be starting for Delaware in '09. So make that six transfer QB's in eight seasons. That is quite the reputation KC is building over there.
