Honestly, I don't want to move back down. I don't think it would ever happen. I say it in jest because of the things that I feel should be done differently. I want to operate like a D1 institution. The attention to detail is what bothers me. I understand the overwhelming costs of some of the needs WIU has but the lack of execution on the little things leaves me feeling lost on what the true goal of the athletic department is (don't copy and paste the mission statement for me). The schools has lost focus on using athletics as a marketing tool. Also, I have been taught athletics provides a window to the school for the general public to view. It is the nature of our society to follow sports... I think we would all want to show that we have pride, class, talent, intelligence, and much more. I do not see that being reflected at the levels they should be at the moment.

Moving to D-II would have a negtive ripple effect.

Sending a broad mssg to all that WIU is moving backwards.

WIU is in a situation no different than probablly 40-50 D-I schools right now as far as money woes, and a bleek outlook when it comes to trying to keep up with the cost of D-I sports. Many schools are losing lots of money.

I think that the University of South Dakota will be joining at the same time that Centennary will be leaving. So that should leave the Conference with 10 teams.

The ever changing landscape that is the Summit. It appears that Centenary is progressing forward on their initiative to Move to DIII.

Centenary board OKs switch to Division III

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Board of Trustees for Centenary College has voted to move the college's athletic program from Division I to Division III.

Tuesday's vote to leave the Summit League comes as the school works to stabilize its finances.

Ed Crawford, the board's acting chairman, says the move is a small part of a larger plan to achieve financial and academic stability.

Centenary will continue to participate in Division I for the next two years in the Summit League while it pursues a new conference affiliation in Division III.

The prospect of Division III membership has been hovering at Centenary for several years, but the economic downturn sped it up. The school's endowment is down 20 percent and it is seeking $1.5 million in budget cuts.

Guess that means the Summit would be looking for a replacment to keep the league at 10 teams.

Note: Illinois chose to get rid of it's native american imagery. The NCAA graciously allowed them to keep the Illini nickname. So at this time U of I is savage imagery free. At least in public circles.

Okay! I missed that. That's gonna be tough on UND, then....

Too bad, too, because it would have made a lot of sense to bring them in with USD (for all the reasons above - even number of teams, geography with NDSU and SDSU, etc.)...

Have you read that somewhere (not looking at UND because of their nickname) or is that just what people are thinking/saying? Because that would be a pretty silly reason in my opinion. The Big Ten and/or Missouri Valley Conference aren't looking at getting rid of Illinois or Bradley because of their nicknames (or did Bradley change theirs? can't recall now)...

The Summit League came out with a statement Monday saying they would not look at UND becacue of their nickname. If the Native American tribes of North Dakota don't approve of the name, there will be a lot of ignoring UND. The difference between FSU and UND is the Native American tribes in the state support the use of the nickname.

They aren't looking at UND because of their mascot. So as far as I know they are only looking at one team.

Hopefully the Summit is looking at adding 2 new teams with South Dakota being one of the two. That would give the Summit 12 teams.

Only adding South Dakota would give the Summit 11 teams--resulting in an odd number of teams which complicates scheduling.
