Yea! Good for us! We are finally a member of the MVC in something! Did you know that before the Mid Con had softball WIU played in the MVC and won the tournament championship a couple of times!!!!!! Saw the on the MVC softball webpage when I went looking for information about Drake winning the MVC tournament championship. They ended the season 29-25.

Next name change required...........Westerwinds to Leathernecks!!!!!!

Folks,

I would be very surprised if a name change from Gateway to MVC would result in the destruction of what has become the toughest championship level football conference in the United States. The MVC Men's Soccer already has Eastern Illinois and Western Kentucky as associate members. It would seem to me that if the name is changed, WIU, YSU, NDst, and SDst would also be listed as football playing members just like Temple is a football playing member in the MAC. I would love to see Summit basketball reach the level played and attended in the MVC. I am not sure what I think of Goldfarb holding out for conference membership! Don't think that is going to happen anytime soon and to tell you the truth, with the addition of the Dakotas and IUFW I am beginning to think the Summit is on its way.

Western is a great institution that we all can and should be proud of. The sky is not falling nor is it going to fall anytime soon!

You can still access the Gateway Football Conference webpage by going to:
www.gatewayfootball.org

So perhaps WESTERN needs to re-do its Icon Link on the Athletics webpage.

But I do notice that the Gateway's webpage now has ads and news items about the Missouri Valley Conference. Sounds like the transition has begun.

I just visited the WIU athletic site, and clicked on the Gateway Football Conference icon, and it took me straight to the Missouri Valley site.

If this name-change does happen, the 4 teams that are not now part of the MVC (WESTERN, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, and Youngstown State) could be left in a conference of only 4 teams.

The 5 remaining teams would need to add one member to reach the miminum requirement of 6 teams to maintain its automatic entry into the 1-AA Playoffs. I think that Wichita State could become that 6th team.

Us four remaining teams could go back up to six by adding North Dakota and South Dakota. Southern Utah has expressed an interest in the past to join the Gateway. So maybe they could become a 7th team.

Bravo to President Goldfarb for holding his ground!

Missouri Valley Football?

A lot of talk on the Valley site about the Gateway changing it's name to the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Rumor has the vote taking place on 6 June. Supposedly, President Goldfarb has been holding things up by indicating he wouldn't vote for it unless the entire WESTERN program was admitted to the MVC. If this be true- KUDOS TO PRESIDENT GOLDFARB for taking a stand! Unfortunately, the vote appears to be stacked against him.
Not much love on the Valley site for admitting WESTERN to the conference.

This could play out several ways in the future. Not all of which could be favorable to WESTERN.
