The answer to the question of who is the greatest Leathernecknationer of all time is subjective.
However I will add my own parameters to make it more measurable.

Minimal criteria is:

active on this board within the year from this date.

I know the blog has recieved some air time in the national media but many people aren't aware of it. Check it out if you are looking to kill time. This is an especially awesome read for people in college or recent graduates because of the pop culture references.

What will it take to bring the Tournament back to the Quad Cities?

The MidCon tournament at one time was held at the Mark of the Quad Cities in Moline. What would it take to get the Tournament back there (i-wireless center now).

Quad-City metro is twice that of Sioux Falls the i-wireless Center is a better facility and geographically Moline is closer for Oakland, IPFW, IUPUI, UMKC, ORU, and WIU, SUU is a wash, flying by plane Quad City might be 10 minutes further.

Since I do not think that WIU is going to be able to leave the Summit what can be done to better the conference? I would like to see the conference and school improve together. We are currently 7th out of ten schools in the Commissioner Cup rankings. I feel that if WIU gets the right leader for athletics things can be turned around over time. It will take the execution of a detailed long term plan but there is no doubt in my mind the potential exists.

Centenary is leaving and Univ of South Dakota is coming in already. My numbers show this already. Rebranding the conference was a very smart move in my opinion. Also, I feel the Dakotas have brought a lot to the table. I do not like the random placement of a Utah school. I like that WIU is the only Illinois school in the conference in a strange way. A lot of people point to this as a bad thing. However, it offers the school a chance to still schedule in state schools for non conference games.

1-IL 2-IN 1-MI 1-OK 1-MO 2-SD 1-Utah 1-ND

I would like to see Southern Utah leave the Summit and be replaced by North Dakota. This makes sense for a lot of reasons to me. How would it be pulled off though? It is a long road trip to Cedar City and it makes no sense for the Summit to have the 4th best DI from Utah being in the conference rather than North Dakota representing the state and holding solid resources. I understand they are addressing their nickname issues.

You could keep Southern Utah and add Utah Valley University (not a very good athletic school) for travel partnership. That would leave an unsettled number of eleven teams though. It would make sense from there to invite Chicago State back to the Summit. I am not sure why they left in the first place. I know they had issues but the conference should have policed them and kept the Cougars in for the Chicago market. Part of the move is to get back into the Chicago market. Chicago State and Utah Valley are in the Great West Conference which is not where anyone would want to be. Eventually I think the two Texas schools will be picked up by a southern conference (Southland?) and NJIT will join a New England conference (American East Conference?). Eventually the Great West schools will end up setting up associate memberships together and find real conferences. That makes sense to me unless they add several more schools.

I think my original idea is better leaving out Utah all together. Maybe Southern Utah if told to take a hike would join up with Utah Valley and approach the Big West for membership. I know that is an awkward situation but it would be best for the conference. Can the Summit even do that? Do other WIU fans agree? What other ideas are floating around out there?

From my vantage point on east coast, it appears like the site is out of service today. Maybe just a temporary glitch because of the holiday. Maybe just a problem from my computer. Maybe someone just overlooked renewing domain or paying the hosting fee. Or maybe they are rehosting the whole site right here on LeatherNeck Nation.com. Who knows for sure. Worst case scenario: yet another cost-saving maneuver by the Athletic Department. Nah, that couldn't be it, could it?

WESTERN's Soccer Field

While we all know that the west seating area of Hanson Field is a decrepit eye-sore, the condition of the soccer field is even worse!

I was at the women's soccer game on Sunday vs Oakland in which WESTERN won 2-1 in a thrilling ending.

The condition and appearance of that venue is just downright awful. There are 3 very old sections of bleachers for the fans. That is it! And the condition of those bleachers borders on being a safety hazard. No self-respecting junior football league would have such inadequate seating.

I saw A.D. Van Alstine and V.P. Johnson at the game. Certainly they noticed the poor conditions.

If WESTERN wants to use temporary bleachers for its "grandstand" at least find something in better condition than what is there now.

This is not a real D-1 facility by any means!

I have two friends that have either become disallusioned or have for whatever reason fallen off the Leatherneck gird. Both of my friends are not casul WIU suporters but rather full blown 'Neck fanatics.

I want to start an effort to bring back our friends.

Leatherface.........as rapidly as he disappeared I feared the worst that he was not with us anymore, not true, we need to get this true american involved again, as he is one of my original faves. ( hey remember when we talked about getting Valpo on the Sched. back in '07)

OVC is a mighty weak conference

I was checking out the Sagarin Ratings, as I tend to do every week, and couldn't help but notice the OVC's ranking.

We can all agree that Indiana State is not good, that being said, more than half of the teams in the 9 member OVC are rated worse than ISUblue

No wonder Eastern fools people into thinking they are so good when the rest of the conference is comprised of really bad teams. Although, I will admit EIU looks pretty ligit this year.

WIU and WJEQ

I noticed on goleathernecks.com that WIU has renewed their agreement with WJEQ which was not a surprise but good news none the less.

My question is there was made mention that WJEQ is a 25,000 Watt station. Is that recentley new? I know they used to be a 10,000 watt station.

This would make a huge difference in the regional coverage area for Leatherneck sports. I live in East Peoria and my options last year if I could not make it to a game were to listen to it from my car radio in the driveway (or driving around town) or to listen to it online. The signal was not strong enough to pick up on my home stereo.

My second question is what has become of the Britton and Jones tandom that have done the games for so many years?

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University Vice President for Student Services Dr. Garry Johnson and Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine today announced that the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will reinstate its men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. It was announced on June 5, 2009 that the two programs were to be eliminated in an effort to balance the 2009-10 athletics department budget.

University officials understand that more significant restructuring is required to establish a long-term funding model that will support a competitive broad-based NCAA Division I athletics program. Further, Western Illinois University is committed to accommodating the interests and abilities of its student-athletes while making these restructuring decisions.

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, which consisted of 23 student-athletes on partial scholarships in 2008-09, will continue competition at the Division I level this fall. A national search for a head coach will begin immediately.

“We are grateful for the Leatherneck swimming and diving family and the greater swimming community, who have provided input, assistance and financial support during this process,” said Van Alstine. “It is very apparent, now more than ever, that the support for swimming and diving on a national scale is alive and well. Without that support we would not be able to continue our success in the pool and in the classroom.”

Western Illinois has not eliminated a sport since 1985 when men’s wrestling and women’s field hockey were dropped. Women’s soccer was added in 1997 and women’s golf was added in 2001, bringing the total number of Division I sports programs to 20.

“We will go back to the drawing board and continue to look for creative ways to fund a broad-based, gender-neutral department at a competitive Division I level,” Van Alstine continued. “(The decision to cut swimming and diving) was certainly not an easy one, and I am very happy for our swimming and diving student-athletes today.”

Western Illinois eliminates men's and women's swimming and diving programs

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University Vice President for Student Services Dr. Garry Johnson and Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Tim Van Alstine announced at the Board of Trustees meeting Friday morning that the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will eliminate its men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs in an effort to reduce annual operating expenses.

“This was a difficult decision made after much analysis and evaluation across campus,” said Van Alstine. “We are committed to maintaining a successful broad-based, gender-neutral athletics program, and this move will economically allow us to continue that commitment. As a department we have been working through a very difficult budget situation for some time now, and unfortunately we have been forced to make some hard sacrifices.”

According to Van Alstine, the decision was based strictly on economics and will not impact the department’s gender equity numbers.

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams consisted of 23 student-athletes on partial scholarships in 2008-09. The scholarships will continue to be awarded, and any student-athlete wishing to transfer will be granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA. Members of the team were notified early Friday by Van Alstine.

The 5.95 women’s scholarships and 3.85 men’s scholarships dedicated to the swimming and diving teams will be reallocated, as they become available, into existing sport programs in an effort to reach the maximum number of scholarships allowed by the NCAA. The team currently is without a head coach but employs two graduate assistant coaches.

“We will do everything we can to ensure that our current student-athletes graduate,” said Van Alstine. “We are very appreciative of the many academic and athletic accomplishments of our swimming and diving student-athletes, both past and present. They are still part of us and we will always value their contributions. If there is one positive here, it is that no full-time people are involved. While we feel for the many people this decision affects, we are fortunate that we did not have to take away a full-time employee’s job.”

4 Northern Iowa Baseball Players Transfer to WESTERN

Western Illinois head baseball coach Stan Hyman announced the addition of four former University of Northern Iowa players to the Leathernecks 2010 roster.

Northern Iowa announced the elimination its baseball program on Feb. 3, 2009, due to budget cuts at the university. All student-athletes with eligibility remaining were allowed to transfer for the 2010 season by the NCAA, with no eligibility penalty for changing schools.

UNI starting first baseman Jason Summers, right-handed starting pitcher Carlos Pinedo, lefty reliever Chris Macek, and righty reliever Ivan Lopez have transferred to Western Illinois to play baseball.

“It’s great to be able to add four quality players who have Division I experience,” Coach Hyman said. “With the unfortunate situation at Northern Iowa, it’s also gratifying to be able to give these guys the opportunity to continue their already successful baseball and academic careers.”

Summers, a 6-1, 220-pound senior from Kent, Wash., played 45 games for the Panthers last season, starting in 43 contests. Summers hit .290 with 10 doubles, one home run and 33 RBIs. He walked 34 times in 145 at-bats and scored 28 runs.

“Jason is a proven Division I hitter and will hit in the middle of our order,” Hyman noted. “He’s a solid first baseman and will help us defensively as well.”

In addition, Summers was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention list with a 3.83 grade point average as a General Studies major.

“We’re always looking for academic leadership as well,” Hyman added. “Jason will help us set the bar in the classroom as well as on the field.”

Pinedo, a native of Wilmington, Calif., appeared in 12 games in 2009 for the Panthers, starting 10 times. In 43 innings on the mound, he walked only 15 while compiling a 6.85 ERA and garnering two victories.

“Carlos is a bulldog on the mound and has already faced some of the best D-I competition,” Hyman said. “He comes from a good junior college (Los Angeles Harbor) program in California and knows how to be a successful starting pitcher.”

Lopez, from Torrance, Calif., made 19 appearances in relief at UNI last season, the second most by a member of the Panthers bull pen. In 17 innings pitched, Lopez walked only six and struck out 10 while posting a 6.23 ERA. Lopez also came to UNI from Los Angeles Harbor Community College.

“Ivan is capable of starting or coming out of the pen,” said Hyman. “He’s used to pitching in tough situations with the game on the line. His game experience is invaluable.”

Macek, a 6-0, 180-pound red-shirt freshman southpaw from Frankfort, Ill., saw limited action in 2009, appearing in eight games and tossing 10 innings. A graduate of Lincoln Way East High School, he is reunited with former teammates in junior catcher John Koszulinski and sophomore outfielder Tom Lilja.

“We liked Chris out of high school and feel he will be extremely effective from the left side for us,” Hyman said. “Although he pitched mostly out of the bullpen at UNI, he has the ability to start. He comes from a quality high school program which has already produced several top players for us. He’s a good fit for Western.”

My thoughts! Women's Soccer and Men's Baseball! More scholies for soccer will make them that much more competitive and put them over the top. We all need men's baseball needs help!

South Dakota Joins the Summit !!

From the Summit League:

South Dakota will be the 11th member of the Summit League when the school officially begins NCAA Division I competition.

The school will begin league competition in the 2011-12 season and will have full eligibility for regular-season and tournament championships in the next season.

South Dakota will be eligible to compete for championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field and men’s and women’s golf. The school will not be eligible to represent the conference in NCAA competitions that year.

The school will be eligible to compete in conference play in men’s and women’s basketball, women’s soccer and volleyball in 2011-12, but will not be eligible for the conference title or be able to play in the conference tournament.

South Dakota will be eligible to compete in championships in all sports in 2012-13, once it is approved for membership into Division I.

• Delvon Johnson, Washington’s teammate at Western Illinois and Indian Hills, has interest from UAB, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Southern Illinois and Texas Christian University.

• Southeastern Community College guard Larry Dumas, who was with Washington and Johnson at Western Illinois, has interest from Florida International, Loyola (Chicago), Eastern Illinois, and UC-Riverside. Dumas’ season ended prematurely with a knee injury.

This was held on Mondays at lunch time at a downtown Macomb restaurant and was a venue for WESTERN coaches to speak to the local Macomb people.

This seemed like a good idea.

But I have not heard anything about it for a few years. So I am left to assume that it is no longer held.

First I want to start by saying its good to see coach P doing better. Now to get started on the real topic, why must we change something that has been working for us all year. Each coach seemed to have their players excited to play, and than all of a sudden Patterson came back and no one had any confidence. It is not the players to blame. I new every play before it was even ran, coach P is so predictable, the defense knows it, I know it, you know it, and the players know it. We need Henderson back for even a chance at making the playoffs this year. We have a good team and it is a shame this has to happen to them again this year.

Asking you to be objective. Isn't the U of North Dakota and the U of South Dakota on par with NDSU and SDSU regarding football skills and talent? I realize NDSU and SDSU might be slightly ahead, but, aren't the other two really close; and, when they move up to FCS they will be able to compete right away. ( not win a national title, but compete with most FCS programs). I wonder if they couldn't do that now anyway. At least that's the impression I have.

Nobody drafted again?

Unless I am mistaken, it appears that no WIU baseball players were drafted. I believe that this has been the case since about 1994. Our talent level is getting better, but still not one player drafted. Even in-state teams who we are competitive with like Bradley and ISU had multiple players drafted. Stan seems to really hype his kids pre-season, and then gets no results.

Minnesota State should join Valley

Minnesota State (Mankato) is the second biggest university in Minnesota. Bigger than new MVFC members NDSU and SDSU, not to mention bigger than Western.

If I am not mistaken Minnesota State was a memeber of the now defunct DII powerhouse NCC. Well, the MVFC is now comprised of 3 former NCC schools. MSU also fits nicely geographicaly within the MVFC footprint. Actually MSU would be less than two hours from UNI and would be alot closer to Western than NDSU and SDSU are.

I would love to have MSU's tradition and competitive athletics in the the Valley (and Summit League). Does anyone know if MSU has aspirations to go D-1?

Not long ago the Dakotas had no D-1 schools and Minnesota had One. Now the Dakotas have Four D-1 schools (or are in the process) and Minnesota has One. That hardley seems right.
